Kangra, Oct 31 (UNI) Himachal Pradesh Governor Kavinder Gupta on Saturday laid the foundation stone of the Parmarth Eco Village at Manei (Bhandrela) in Kangra district, describing the project as an important initiative towards environmental conservation and human service.
Addressing the gathering, the Governor said the project was not merely the beginning of an infrastructure initiative but an effort to establish harmony between nature and humanity. He expressed confidence that the Eco Village would emerge as an inspirational centre, encouraging future generations to adopt a sustainable lifestyle in harmony with nature.
Emphasising that development and environmental protection were complementary, Gupta said climate change had emerged as a major global challenge and addressing it required collective efforts and positive changes in individual lifestyles and behaviour, beyond government policies and programmes.
He suggested developing the Eco Village as a learning and inspiration centre where students, farmers, researchers, young entrepreneurs, self-help groups and other sections of society could learn about and adopt environment-friendly practices.
Referring to initiatives such as 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam', Swachh Bharat Mission, Jal Jeevan Mission, Amrit Sarovar Abhiyan and Mission LiFE launched under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said environmental protection was the shared responsibility of every citizen.
Highlighting the ecological importance of Himachal Pradesh, the Governor said the state's rivers, forests, Himalayan ecosystem, biodiversity and natural water resources were invaluable assets that needed to be preserved. Tourism, agriculture and horticulture should be promoted without putting undue pressure on the environment, he added.
He expressed hope that the Eco Village would promote organic farming, local products, traditional knowledge, natural lifestyles and eco-friendly tourism, while creating new livelihood opportunities for farmers, women, youth, self-help groups and local entrepreneurs.
Paying tribute to Swami Chidanand Saraswati of Parmarth Niketan, Rishikesh, the Governor appreciated his contribution towards linking spirituality with social responsibility, human service and environmental conservation. He said Swamiji's guidance and blessings would give the project a distinct identity.
Gupta also appreciated the Vrinda Foundation Trust for conceptualising the project and particularly commended its patron Dr Meghna Chaudhary for her vision and commitment.
On the occasion, the Governor launched a campaign with a pledge to plant one lakh saplings for environmental conservation by planting a sapling himself.
He honoured Rakesh and Dinesh for donating land for the Eco Village.
Local artist Sanjay Dhiman and environmental conservationist Rumi Devi were also felicitated for their contributions.
Swami Divyanand Puri Maharaj, former District and Sessions Judge K K Sharma, former District Judge Anil, Dr Meghna Chaudhary, foundation members Rahul Sharma, Sanjeev Singh, Pramod Kumar, Ashish Kumar and Gauransh Sirohi, besides Dr Neelu Sharma, Dr Gautam Pathania and Professor Anupam, were among those present.
