DRDO signs first high-value TDF pact with start-up for indigenous 20 mK dilution refrigerator

New Delhi, Sep 24 (UNI) The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has signed its first high-value deep-tech project agreement under the Technology Development Fund (TDF) scheme with Rajasthan-based start-up Zero mK India Pvt Ltd for the indigenous development of a 20 millikelvin (mK) dilution refrigerator for quantum applications.
The agreement was signed in the national capital between the Director, TDF, and Zero mK India Pvt Ltd, Alwar, marking the first high-value project under the Rs 500-crore corpus approved by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh for deep-tech and cutting-edge technology projects.
Dilution refrigerators are specialised cryogenic systems capable of achieving temperatures in the millikelvin range and are critical for the operation and testing of several quantum computing platforms and associated quantum technologies.
The development of a 20 mK-class dilution refrigerator is aimed at strengthening India's capabilities in quantum technology and advanced cryogenics, while supporting the creation of a self-reliant domestic ecosystem for strategic technologies.
The project is also aligned with the objectives of the National Quantum Mission and is expected to help reduce dependence on imported cryogenic infrastructure while strengthening indigenous capabilities in quantum technologies.
The Defence Minister congratulated DRDO, industry and other stakeholders associated with the project and expressed confidence that the partnership would set an important precedent for future DRDO-industry collaborations in emerging technology domains.
Defence Secretary and Secretary, Department of Defence R&D, and Chairman, DRDO, Rajesh Kumar Singh also congratulated the teams and wished them success in achieving the project objectives.
The initiative is being monitored, mentored and supported by the Director, Solid State Physics Laboratory (SSPL), and his team.
Director General, Micro Electronic Devices & Computational System and Cyber Security (DG MCC), Director General, Technology Management (DG TM), Director, SSPL and other stakeholders were present during the signing ceremony.
