DRI seizes foreign currency worth Rs 1.56 cr at Hyderabad airport, arrests two

Hyderabad, Oct 24 (UNI) The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized foreign currency worth around Rs 1.56 cr from two Indian passengers at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport here and arrested them for failing to produce documents supporting its lawful procurement and carriage, the agency said on Saturday.
Acting on specific intelligence, DRI officials of the Hyderabad Zonal Unit intercepted a male passenger scheduled to travel to Kuala Lumpur on AirAsia flight AK-68 on the night of October 22.
A search of his cabin baggage led to the recovery of USD 66,600, MYR 3,773 and SGD 2, collectively valued at around Rs 63.62 lakh, the agency said in a statement.
The currency was concealed among clothes inside a black plastic cover in his trolley bag, it added.
During preliminary questioning, officials learnt that a female passenger was also travelling on the same flight under a different passenger name record (PNR).
She was subsequently intercepted, and a search of her cabin baggage led to the recovery of USD 97,600, valued at around Rs 91.94 lakh. The currency was concealed in a similar manner, the agency said.
As both passengers failed to produce supporting documents, the entire foreign currency, worth approximately Rs 1.56 crore, along with the trolley bags used to conceal it, was seized under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962.
Both passengers have been arrested, and further investigation is underway, the DRI said.
