Duckett's 167, Rathnayake's 118 in vain as England beat Sri Lanka by 55 runs

Lahore, Oct 29 (UNI) Ben Duckett smashed a magnificent 167 and Liam Dawson claimed four wickets as England defeated Sri Lanka by 55 runs in the Pakistan ODI Tri-Series here on Thursday.
Chasing a daunting target of 387, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 331 in 45.1 overs despite a valiant 118 off 77 balls by Pavan Rathnayake and an aggressive 89 off 71 deliveries by captain Kusal Mendis.
Rathnayake struck 15 fours and a six, while Mendis hit eight fours and five sixes, but their efforts could not prevent Sri Lanka from falling short.
Rathnayake and Mendis kept the chase alive with crucial contributions in the middle order. Mendis was dismissed by Joe Root at 177 in the 27th over, while Rathnayake continued to fight until he fell to Liam Dawson in the 45th over with Sri Lanka at 329 for eight.
Avishka Fernando contributed 48 off 50 balls, while Sahan Arachchige scored 30 off 24 deliveries. However, regular wickets in the final overs derailed the chase.
Dawson was England's standout bowler, returning figures of four for 49 in 10 overs. Sonny Baker claimed two wickets for 75 runs, while Henry Crocombe, Sam Curran and Root took one wicket each.
Earlier, England posted 386 for five in their allotted 50 overs after Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bowl.
Duckett anchored the innings with a 132-ball 167, smashing 24 fours, while Tom Banton scored 74 off 75 deliveries, including eight fours and two sixes. The pair added 163 runs for the opening wicket.
Captain Harry Brook contributed 44 off 34 balls, while Jordan Cox made a brisk 43 off 27 deliveries. Will Jacks scored 30 off 21 balls and Curran remained unbeaten on 21 off 12 deliveries.
Asitha Fernando was Sri Lanka's most successful bowler with two for 63, while Eshan Malinga conceded 101 runs for one wicket.
The 55-run victory gave England a strong finish in the tri-series contest, with Duckett's commanding century and Dawson's decisive spell proving instrumental in overcoming Sri Lanka's spirited chase.
Brief scores: England 386/5 in 50 overs (Ben Duckett 167, Tom Banton 74, Harry Brook 44; Asitha Fernando 2/63) beat Sri Lanka 331 all out in 45.1 overs (Pavan Rathnayake 118, Kusal Mendis 89, Avishka Fernando 48; Liam Dawson 4/49) by 55 runs.
