DVAC slaps yet another case on ex-DMK Min EV.Velu, booked for illegal sand mining

Chennai, Sep 27 (UNI) The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) on Sunday registered a fresh case against former Highways Minister and senior DMK leader E V Velu following a complaint alleging illegal sand mining from Malappampadi lake in
his native Tiruvannamalai district of Tamil Nadu.
The anti-corruption crusader Arappor Iyakkam in yet another complaint claimed that, soil worth about Rs 8 crore was illegally mined from Malappampadi lake. The organisation had approached the DVAC on August 13, alleging that soil was excavated from the lake for the purpose of levelling a venue used for a DMK North Zone Youth Wing conference coordinated by the DMK strongman.
Following the complaint, the DVAC booked the ex-Minister and his son E.V.Kumaran in this case.
The Anti-Corruption agency had already registered a corruption case against Velu, his son, and several Highway department officials
over alleged multi-crore irregularities in road construction contracts on a 2022 complaint from the Arappor Iyakkam Convenor Jayaram Venkatesan, alleging that funds worth crores were disbursed for unexecuted road works under the Comprehensive Road Infrastructure Development Programme (CRIDP) in districts like Tiruppur, Karur, and Kancheepuram.
The DVAC booked Velu, his son, nine former highways department officials, and private contractors, conducted simultaneous searches across multiple locations linked to the, recovered Rs 40 lakh unaccounted cash, digital evidence, and official documents. Velu termed
the case as politically motivated and denied all charges of rule violations or malpractice, stating that the approvals followed regular administrative procedures with finance department approval.
He moved the Madras High Court seeking to quash the criminal case. The Court issued look-out circular (LOC) against him and later withdrew it after he appeared before it. He also appeared before the DVAC for questioning and after the hearings, the Court has reserved its orders on his plea to quash the FIR.
In the fresh complaint to the DVAC, the Arappor Iyakkam alleged that sand mining had taken place in aboit 12 acres of Malappampadi lake, with soil being removed to depths ranging from 10 to 23 feet (3 to 7 metres). It further alleged that the quantity excavated was beyond the limit permitted under the applicable rules. The excavated sand was allegedly transported to land belonging to Arunai Products and Services Private Limited, a company owned Velu's son Kumaran.
The complainant alleged that E V Kumaran had not obtained the required permission from the Revenue Department, the Corporation or the Geology and Mining Department for soil mining from the lake and demanded action against them including registeration of a case.
