DYFI activists attack Kerala Minister O J Janeesh’s vehicle in Kannur

Kannur, Oct 1 (UNI) Kerala Minister and Youth Congress state president O J Janeesh’s official vehicle was allegedly attacked by DYFI activists at multiple places in Kannur district on Thursday, shortly after DYFI leader and MLA M Vijin allegedly warned that the organisation would confront the issue on the streets.
The incident occurred as Janeesh was travelling to Kasaragod after attending an official Archaeology Department programme in Kannur.
The first incident occurred at Kuppam in Taliparamba, where DYFI activists allegedly stopped the vehicle and attacked it with stones and their hands, damaging its flag pole and rain guard. Police and security personnel accompanying the minister intervened to remove the protesters.
The vehicle faced protests at several other locations on its way through Kannur, with alleged attacks reported at five places, including Taliparamba and Payyannur.
Stones were hurled at the car soon after it crossed Payyannur, damaging other parts of the vehicle. Two direct attacks allegedly occurred within an hour.
The Congress alleged that the repeated attacks pointed to a serious police security lapse.
The incidents came a day after violent clashes between Youth Congress and SFI activists in Thiruvananthapuram during a Youth Congress march against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the BJP. The march was led by Janeesh and Congress MP Shafi Parambil.
Janeesh alleged that SFI activists deliberately provoked violence by throwing a beer bottle at protesters and attempting to disrupt what he described as a peaceful Congress demonstration.
Chief Minister V D Satheesan alleged that SFI and DYFI activists were deliberately provoking incidents and attempting to create unrest in the state. He warned that strong legal action would follow if the violence continued. Satheesan also questioned the CPI(M)’s alleged opposition to Congress and allied organisations protesting against the BJP, asking why the party was uncomfortable with Congress opposition to the Sangh Parivar.
The Kannur incident is part of a series of political confrontations involving vehicles of ministers and senior political leaders in the state.
On Wednesday evening, Local Self-Government Minister K M Shaji’s vehicle was stopped by Yuva Morcha activists near Vanross Junction in Thiruvananthapuram. The protesters allegedly blocked it with BJP flags. Shaji got out and tried to continue in an autorickshaw, but protesters allegedly stopped that vehicle as well, forcing him to walk through the city with security personnel.
The incidents have raised concerns over security arrangements for ministers and political leaders amid escalating political clashes in the state. Following the latest incidents, police have strengthened security for Janeesh, deploying additional personnel during his public programmes and journeys and providing more pilot and escort vehicles during travel through different districts.
Special surveillance has also been arranged around his office and residence because of the possibility of protests.
Kannur police have registered a case over the alleged attack on the minister’s vehicle and launched an investigation to identify those involved.
