Ranchi, Oct 29 (UNI) The BJP on Thursday criticised the Jharkhand government's decision to impose an additional 10 per cent surcharge on the registration of land and buildings, alleging that the move would increase the financial burden on poor and middle-class families.
BJP state spokesperson Sandeep Verma termed the cabinet decision anti-people and urged the government to withdraw it immediately, saying the additional charge would make it more difficult for families to fulfil their dream of owning a house or land.
Verma said people in Jharkhand already faced difficulties in land transactions, registration and mutation. Instead of simplifying the procedures and making them transparent and affordable, the government was imposing an additional financial burden, he alleged.
He said the government should focus on providing relief to citizens rather than increasing charges in the name of revenue generation. Land and houses represented the lifetime savings and future security of many families, he added.
Referring to the previous BJP government led by Raghubar Das, Verma said the provision allowing property registration in women's names for Re 1 had been introduced to promote women's ownership and economic empowerment. He alleged that the Hemant Soren government had discontinued the scheme after coming to power.
Verma demanded the immediate withdrawal of the surcharge and called for measures to make property registration and mutation simpler, transparent and free from corruption.
