Ecology, economy go together: union minister Bhupender Yadav

Siliguri, Oct 2 (UNI) union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Bhupender Yadav today stressed the need to balance ecology and economy while developing Buxa Tiger Reserve, saying conservation must also create livelihood opportunities for local communities.
Speaking at an interactive session with reporters at the Circuit House, Yadav said the proposed shifting of villagers from the core area of Buxa would not be forced. “The shifting from the core area will be voluntary. If any family does not want to leave, it will not be forced to do so,” he said.
The issue of relocating families from villages inside the core area had emerged as a major challenge ahead of the tiger reintroduction programme. While some families were reluctant to leave, others had expressed dissatisfaction with the rehabilitation site at Bana Chhaya. Two villages, Bhutia Basti and Gangutia, have already been relocated.
Yadav said relocation would be carried out in phases with a rehabilitation package, based on the willingness of families.
For villages in the buffer zone, he said the focus would be on capacity building and creating tourism-linked livelihood opportunities.
“Ecology and economy have to go together,” Yadav said, adding that Buxa’s natural beauty and biodiversity could provide the foundation for sustainable ecotourism and local employment. UNI MBN NST
