Elephant ‘Omkar’ returns to Sawantwadi Area, heads towards Arosbag

Sawantwadi, Sep 24 ( UNI) ‘Omkar’, the elephant that has been moving through the Maharashtra-Goa border areas for the past few months, has once again returned to the Sawantwadi region, attracting the attention of local residents and forest officials.
The elephant, which was spotted in the border areas around the time of Ganesh Chaturthi, has been drawing crowds, with some people even considering its appearance during the festival as an auspicious sign. However, its movement along busy roads and into human settlements has also raised concerns among residents.
According to local reports, Omkar, which has been moving through Sawantwadi, Dodamarg and the Mopa area of Goa, entered the Banda region after passing through Kas, Madura, Sherle, Arosbag and Meethguli. On Tuesday morning, the elephant was spotted near the Terekhol river in the Alawadi area, prompting a large number of residents to gather to watch it.
The elephant later crossed the Terekhol river and reached Patradevi before travelling for around two kilometres along the old Mumbai-Goa highway. As news of the elephant’s presence spread, vehicles queued up on both sides of the highway, disrupting traffic for some time.
In the evening, Omkar crossed the Terekhol river again and returned towards Maharashtra. It subsequently moved in the direction of Arosbag in the Banda area, according to local sources.
Forest officials and local authorities are keeping track of the elephant’s movements as it continues to travel between forested areas and human settlements. UNI SP AAB
