Emergency period a black chapter in India's history: Odisha CM Majhi

Bhubaneswar, June 25 (UNI) Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi today described the Emergency period as a "black chapter" in the history of independent India.
Speaking on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the declaration of Emergency, which the state government is observing as the “Murder of the Constitution,” Majhi said that no one can forget the "repression and unspeakable atrocities" committed during that time.
“The objective of commemorating this day is to raise widespread awareness against authoritarian rule,” the Chief Minister said.
He informed that the Government of India has launched a year-long programme to mark the event, which will culminate on June 25, 2026, with the aim of passing on the memory of this dark period to the new generation.
“Senior national leaders like Atal Bihari Vajpayee and L.K. Advani were jailed. The repression was so severe that anyone who opposed the government was either imprisoned or saw their newspapers shut down,” he stated.
In Odisha too, prominent leaders such as Dr. Harekrushna Mahatab, Biju Patnaik, and Biswa Bhushan Harichandan were arrested, he added.
Referring to anti-emergency activists present at the event, the Chief Minister said they could better narrate the ordeals they faced in jail during the Emergency. “Many people were detained for months without trial under the MISA Act,” he noted.
Majhi further said that after the BJP assumed power in Odisha, the government decided to increase the pension for freedom fighters from Rs.10,000 to Rs.20,000 per month.
Additionally, he announced that all those who were arrested under the MISA Act for protesting against the Emergency would also receive a monthly pension of Rs.20,000. UNI DP SSP
