Encroachment removal or official high-handedness? Elderly man attempts suicide after shop stall is demolished in Vinchur

Bharat Ghandat
Nashik, Oct 5 (UNI) An encroachment removal drive on the Niphad–Lasalgaon road in Vinchur has taken a serious turn after an elderly man allegedly attempted suicide by consuming poison, reportedly following an altercation with officials during the action.
Ganesh Pandit Salunkhe has submitted a complaint seeking action against Public Works Department (PWD) Sub-Divisional Engineer Mayur Mohite and engineers Kadam and Shelke, alleging that they intimidated his family during the encroachment removal operation.
According to the complaint, Salunkhe has been running a salon business in Vinchur for the past 40 to 45 years to support his family.
On September 28, the PWD carried out an encroachment removal drive on the Niphad–Lasalgaon road.
Salunkhe claims that his stall was located outside the proposed 45-foot road limit.
He alleged that officials repeatedly insisted that the stall be removed and, despite requests, demolished it using a JCB.
Salunkhe further alleged that his father, Pandit Bhikaji Salunkhe, a senior citizen who is blind in one eye, was allegedly subjected to harsh and intimidating behaviour by the officials.
Following the incident, Pandit Salunkhe allegedly consumed poison and attempted suicide. He was immediately admitted to a government hospital, where he received treatment and survived, according to the complaint.
The complainant has demanded an inquiry into whether proper notice was issued before the demolition, whether the stall actually fell within the encroachment area and whether a panchnama was prepared before the action.
The alleged conduct of the officials towards the family has also been sought to be investigated.
The complainant has called for an independent and impartial inquiry and legal action against those found responsible.
While the PWD maintains the need to remove encroachments for road widening, the allegations surrounding the elderly man’s suicide attempt have raised questions over the manner in which the drive was conducted in Vinchur.
Attention is now focused on the administration’s response to the complaint.
