Essar Oil & Gas secures five new CBM blocks across three states

Mumbai, Oct 15 (UNI) Essar Oil & Gas Ltd has secured five coal bed methane (CBM) blocks across West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh and Telangana under the Government of India’s Special CBM (SCBM) Bid Rounds 2025 and 2026, expanding its unconventional hydrocarbon portfolio by approximately 1,281 square kilometres, the company said in a statement here on Thursday.
The contracts were signed on October 15 in the presence of union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri.
The newly awarded blocks have estimated gas-in-place resources of 6.6 trillion cubic feet (TCF).Two blocks in West Bengal’s Raniganj region, covering around 330 sq km, will expand the company’s existing 500 sq km Raniganj East footprint to approximately 830 sq km. The company expects the proximity of the new acreage to its producing asset to generate operational and infrastructure synergies, supporting the development of an integrated CBM field.
The Singrauli block in Madhya Pradesh will strengthen the company’s presence in an established CBM basin, while the two blocks in Telangana’s Godavari Valley will mark its entry into a new geographical area.
'The award of these five CBM blocks marks a significant milestone in Essar Oil & Gas’ growth journey and reinforces our commitment to unlocking India’s vast unconventional hydrocarbon potential,” said Pankaj Kalra, CEO of Essar Oil & Gas Ltd.
The company has invested more than ₹6,000 crore in exploration and production at Raniganj and currently produces around 950,000 standard cubic metres of gas per day, accounting for nearly 50 per cent of India’s CBM output.
Chairman Bhuwan Chandra Tripathi said the expansion would support the development of indigenous energy resources and contribute to India’s energy security. Essar Oil & Gas aims to contribute 5 per cent of India’s natural gas production through the progressive development of its CBM portfolio.
With nearly half of the country’s natural gas consumption met through imports, the company sees domestic resource development as an important avenue for reducing import dependence and supporting India’s transition towards a gas-based economy.
