Ex-Army Officer arrested for allegedly leaking key military data to an unidentified woman

Chennai, Oct 25 (UNI) Close on the heels of the arrest of a 31-year-old Indian Navy sailor on espionage charges for leaking key and sensitive defence/maritime data linked to Visakhapatnam Naval base to a woman Pakistani Intelligence operative, a former Indian Army Officer was arrested in Vellore district of Tamil Nadu for allegedly leaking key and secret military data to an unidentified woman.
Reports said, the retired Army Officer, Babu (52), was lured into the honeytrap by the woman by befriending him through WhatsApp and video calls an year ago, and said to have obtained datas about Army equipment and other defence-related information from him.
Acting on specific intelligence, the Central Intelligence officials kept him under surveillance and arrested him on Friday from his residence. After extensive grilling for two days at the Vellore Taluk Police station by the Central Intelligence Agencies, he was handed over to the Tamil Nadu police last night.
During questioning it came to light that the woman had sought details on defence equipment and defence security related cases from Babu under the guise of working on a project for DRDO. He had shared whatever information sought by her. For some other details which he did not know, he was said to have got it from his former colleagues and present staff over phone and passed it on to her.
Having served in various divisions of the Indian Army, Babu had settled in native Keezhvallam village near Kaniyambadi in Vellore district after his retirement last year in the rank of Captain from the Army's equipment division.
After he was handed over to their custody, the Tamil Nadu police have started digging deep into the matter to ascertain the details of the undientified woman and whether she was acting as an operative for any other country's intelligence unit.
The arrest of Babu comes close on the heels of arrest of an Indian Naval Sailor in Coimbatore on October three for leaking key and sensitive defence/maritime data linked to Visakhapatnam Naval base to a woman Pakistani Intelligence operative. The sailor, Pradeep Mukherjee of West Bengal, was lured into a honeytrap by the woman operative after befriending him on social media a few months ago, sustained it and extracted sensitive data from him on strategic naval assets, fleet movements and operational framework of the Visakhapatnam base.
He was arrested by the Counter Intelligence (CI) Wing of the Andhra Pradesh Police, which landed at INS Agrani in Coimbatore--where he was attending a management development course. He was commissioned into the Navy as a sailor in 2014 and posted under the Eastern Naval Command in Vizag and came to INS Agrani to pursue the management course.
