Fadnavis defends SIR, says electoral rolls need regular revision

Nagpur, Sep 27 ( UNI) Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday defended the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, saying voter lists had not been properly revised since 2000 and should ideally be updated every five years.
Addressing a press conference, Fadnavis said the need for SIR was more pronounced in urban areas than in rural Maharashtra due to large-scale migration to cities.
He urged political parties to introspect instead of questioning the electoral revision process.
Responding to allegations that the SIR had led to a decline in the number of voters in some constituencies, including Nagpur Lok Sabha constituency, Fadnavis cited the example of West Bengal.
He said that even in 15 constituencies where the number of voters had declined substantially following the revision, Trinamool Congress candidates were elected.
“If voters were removed because they were allegedly BJP voters, how did TMC candidates win in all these constituencies?” he asked.
Fadnavis also criticised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his allegations against constitutional institutions, accusing him of repeatedly questioning such institutions and seeking to undermine public confidence in them.
The Chief Minister further described Gandhi's political approach as “extreme Left” and alleged that attempts are being made to erode people's faith in the Constitution and democratic institutions.
Referring to the controversy surrounding the SIR exercise, Fadnavis said all three Election Commissioners had stated that the process was undertaken unanimously and that there was no dissent among them.
He also dismissed confusion over Form 6 used for electoral registration, saying the Supreme Court had upheld the validity of the form in the prescribed format.
Fadnavis maintained that attempts to create doubts about the SIR process and constitutional institutions were unwarranted and reiterated that electoral rolls needed to be revised regularly, particularly in cities witnessing significant migration.
