Fake credit card reward offer costs Faridabad man Rs 62,029; woman caller among two arrested

Faridabad, Oct 24 (UNI) A fraudulent offer to redeem credit card reward points cost a Faridabad resident Rs 62,029 after cybercriminals posing as ICICI Bank representatives allegedly tricked him into disclosing his card details on a fake website, police said on Saturday, announcing the arrest of two suspects, including a woman who made the deceptive call.
The accused have been identified as Nikhil Punia, a resident of Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh, and a woman whose identity has not been disclosed. Both allegedly operated from rented hotel rooms to carry out online fraud.
According to a police spokesperson, the complainant, a resident of Faridabad's NIT area, received a call on September 13 from a woman claiming to represent ICICI Bank. She informed him that reward points accumulated on his credit card were eligible for redemption under a special offer.
The caller allegedly directed him to a fraudulent website, icici manage.web.app, and persuaded him to enter his credit card details.
Soon after he submitted the information, Rs 62,029 was debited from his account without his authorisation. Following his complaint, Cyber Police Station NIT registered a fraud case and launched an investigation that led to the arrest of the two accused.
Investigators said the woman was responsible for contacting the victim and persuading him to disclose his financial information, while Nikhil allegedly provided the bank account into which Rs 60,000 of the defrauded money was transferred.
Police said the investigation revealed that the suspects rented hotel rooms to conduct their fraudulent activities. Nikhil has studied up to Class 10, while the woman has completed Class 12.
Both accused were produced before a court. The woman was remanded to judicial custody, while Nikhil was taken into police custody for further interrogation.
Police are investigating the financial transactions and the possible involvement of other individuals in the fraud.
The case highlights the growing threat of online banking fraud in which criminals impersonate bank employees and lure customers with reward redemption offers to obtain sensitive financial information.
