FDA cracks down on food safety violations ahead of Ganeshotsav; licences suspended, stock worth Rs 15.58 lakh seized

Mumbai, Sep 15 (UNI) In a major state-wide enforcement drive, the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has intensified its crackdown on food safety violations, suspending licences of several establishments and seizing more than 4,138 kg of dairy products and sweets valued at Rs 15.58 lakh.
According to a press note issued here on Tuesday the action was undertaken as part of the FDA's festival-focused initiatives, "Safe Food, Safe Maharashtra" and "Sanna Maharashtracha, Sankalp Anna Surakshiteca", aimed at ensuring the safety and quality of food products during the festive season.
In Greater Mumbai, the FDA inspected 38 food establishments between September 11 and 14 and collected 47 samples of milk, khoya, ghee and sweets for laboratory analysis.
Licences of nine establishments were suspended for violations of Schedule 4 requirements under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The establishments include Ruhafza Bakery, Khar Danda; Chandru's Pure Ghee Sweets and Sharma Dairy & Fast Food, Andheri West; Punjabi Chandu Halwai LLP, Grant Road; Shri Narayan Dairy, Vile Parle; Gulshan Dairy Farm, Khar; Tribhuvan Dairy Farm, Ghatkopar West; Mahavir Cashew & Foods Pvt Ltd, Ghatkopar East; and Agrawal Sweet Mart, Jogeshwari.
Krishna Sweets and Snacks, Kanjurmarg, was fined Rs 20,000 for violations.
In a separate inspection on September 12, the FDA suspended the licence of Cafe Mondegar, Colaba, after detecting several serious food safety deficiencies. These included failure to maintain hot food above 60 degrees Celsius and cold storage below 5 degrees Celsius, improper thawing practices, damp and damaged flooring, inadequate drainage in the food preparation area and poorly maintained equipment.
The FDA also took action against Maharashtra Biryani Center in Kandivali East, Tribhuvan Dairy Farm in Ghatkopar and Mahavir Cashew & Foods Pvt Ltd in Ghatkopar.
In the Pune division, licences of Hotel Malhar Wada on Gargoti Road, Kolhapur, and Puramchand and Sons at Market Yard, Pune, were suspended for serious non-compliance with Schedule IV provisions. Expired food products were also detected at Puramchand and Sons.
The enforcement drive extended to several other districts, with suspected substandard dairy products seized in Jalgaon, Kolhapur, Pune and Thane.
In Jalgaon, officials intercepted two vehicles carrying 2,155 kg of suspected substandard Sweet Halwa valued at Rs 5.58 lakh. At Creamy Delight in Daund, Pune, the FDA seized 1,519 kg of milk, butter and skimmed milk powder worth Rs 8.50 lakh.
The FDA has simultaneously stepped up enforcement against banned products such as gutkha, pan masala and flavoured tobacco.
In Rajur of Bhokardan taluka in Jalna district, officials seized banned gutkha worth Rs 95.30 lakh and vehicles valued at Rs 40 lakh on September 9, taking the total seizure to Rs 1.35 crore. FIR No. 253/2026 was registered at Hasanabad police station under Sections 123, 223, 274, 275 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Section 59 of the Food Safety and Standards Act and provisions of the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA).
In Beed city, the FDA, in coordination with police, intercepted a Mahindra Scorpio (MH 23 S 5522) at Barshi Naka and recovered banned gutkha worth Rs 3.63 lakh. Including the vehicle, the total seizure was valued at Rs 10.63 lakh. A case under MCOCA has been registered at Peth Beed police station.
In Greater Mumbai, five establishments were raided on September 12 in connection with the sale and transportation of banned products. Stock worth Rs 20.21 lakh was seized, one FIR was registered, nine persons were arrested and five transport vehicles valued at Rs 98 lakh were confiscated.
Alongside enforcement, the FDA Greater Mumbai, in association with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), conducted five awareness workshops for 320 office-bearers of Ganesh Mandals.
A special workshop titled "Sweetness of Modak, with the Assurance of Food Safety" was also organised for 110 Self-Help Groups engaged in modak preparation. Participants were sensitised to Schedule 4 requirements, Good Hygiene Practices and Good Manufacturing Practices, and advised to complete mandatory registration through the FDA's festival portal.
Joint Commissioner (Food), Greater Mumbai, Parag Nalawade, warned that stringent action would be initiated against establishments found violating food safety norms.
FDA Maharashtra Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe said the government was "extremely strict" about the quality of food products and would not tolerate any activity that compromised consumer health.
He further warned that stringent legal action against violators would continue.
