Pregnant woman raped and murdered in Baramati

Baramati, Sep 15 ( UNI) A 26-year-old man was arrested within two hours of the reported rape and murder of a pregnant woman at the Pandhare MIDC area under the jurisdiction of Malegaon police station in Baramati taluka, police said.
The accused has been identified as Ganesh Ramchandra Mane, a resident of Pandhare in Baramati taluka.
According to police, Mane has allegedly confessed to the crime, and the investigation has revealed disturbing details about the incident.
Police said the accused allegedly assaulted the woman with a hammer after she resisted his attempts to sexually assault her.
He allegedly subjected her to sexual assault while she was injured. When the woman continued to resist, the accused allegedly strangled her with a towel to prevent her from informing anyone about the incident.
Police further said the accused allegedly removed and took away the woman's mangalsutra and anklets after the murder.
A preliminary medical examination report received by the Malegaon police has indicated that the deceased woman was pregnant. The report also found serious injuries to her head and neck, besides injuries to her private parts.
The incident came to light on the night of September 12, when the woman's mother-in-law was informed by neighbours that her son was crying.
She immediately rushed to the couple's residence in the Pandhare MIDC area and found her daughter-in-law lying dead in a pool of blood inside a room. The woman appeared to have been attacked with a weapon, while her mangalsutra and anklets were missing.
The couple was reportedly living separately from their family in the Pandhare MIDC area. Following the incident, a case was registered at Malegaon police station on September 13 on the basis of a complaint lodged by the woman's relatives.
Police conducted a detailed spot inspection and sent the body to the Medical College in Baramati for further medical examination.
During inquiries in the surrounding area, police received information about Mane's suspected involvement in the crime.
He was subsequently taken into custody and questioned. Police said he confessed to the offence during interrogation.
A local court has remanded Mane in police custody till September 16.
Further investigation is underway.
