Fishing banned in Himachal’s water bodies from June 16 to August 15

Shimla, June 17(UNI) The Himachal Pradesh Fisheries Department has imposed a complete ban on fishing activities in all general water bodies of the state from June 16 to August 15. The move aims to conserve aquatic biodiversity and allow the natural breeding of fish during this peak spawning season.
According to the Director-cum-Chief Fisheries Officer, Pawan Kumar, the ban is an annual initiative to ensure the replenishment of fish species, especially in the five major reservoirs of the state—Gobind Sagar, Pong, Chamera, Koldam, and Ranjit Sagar—and other rivers and streams.
“During this two-month period, most of the important fish species reproduce naturally. This helps in the natural collection of fish seed in water bodies,” he said.
To enforce the ban effectively, the department has set up 20 monitoring camps in Bilaspur district—17 in Gobind Sagar and three in Koldam—along with a flying squad. Similarly, 17 camps and a flying squad have been deployed at Pong Dam, and five camps and a flying squad are active in Chamba district, covering Chamera and Ranjit Sagar dams. These personnel will patrol both road and water routes to prevent illegal fishing.
Any violation of the fishing ban will be met with stringent action. The law provides for up to three years of imprisonment, a fine of Rs 5,000, or both. Particularly, fishing using nets during the restricted period is classified as a non-bailable offence.
Around 13,000 fishermen across the state depend on fishing for their livelihood, with over 6,300 of them operating in the major reservoirs covering an area of approximately 43,785 hectares. The department has appealed to all stakeholders to support the conservation effort and refrain from fishing during the ban period.
“This seasonal ban is crucial to preserving our aquatic resources for the future,” Kumar added.
