Five accused in Hangal gangrape case re-arrested

Haveri (Karnataka), May 24 (UN) Five of the seven accused in the 2024 Hangal gangrape case were re-arrested by the Haveri police on Friday after they allegedly took out a celebratory rally and uploaded videos on social media following their release on bail.

Superintendent of Police Anshu Kumar said the accused were granted bail on May 20. "While returning from Bailhongal to Aki Alur after securing bail, they created a public nuisance by organising a celebratory procession. They recorded videos of the event and shared them on social media platforms," he said.

Taking cognisance of the incident, police registered a case at Hangal police station under Crime No. 84/25. The case has been booked under Sections 189 (2), 191 (2), 281, 351 (2), and 351 (3) read with Section 190 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

“All five arrested accused will be produced before the court. We will also be filing an application for cancellation of bail in the original gangrape case, as the accused have violated bail conditions,” the SP added.

Further investigation is underway to trace the remaining accused.
