Flood situation remains critical as several rivers flowing above danger marks

Patna, Oct 4 (UNI) The flood situation in Bihar remained grim on Sunday as the Ganga, Gandak, Kosi, Bagmati, Burhi Gandak, Kamla and Ghaghra rivers continued to flow above their respective danger marks at several locations, with rising water levels in some areas causing concern among people living along the riverbanks.
According to data released this morning by the Water Resources Department, the Gandak was flowing 0.48 metre above the danger mark at Dumariaghat in Gopalganj and 0.78 metre above the danger mark at Lalganj in Vaishali. The water level, however, was receding at both locations.
At 9 am, the Gandak was recorded at 62.68 metres at Dumariaghat, against the danger mark of 62.22 metres.
The Kosi was flowing 0.34 metre above the danger mark at Baltara in Khagaria and 0.57 metre above the mark at Kursela in Katihar. While the water level was receding at Baltara, it continued to rise at Kursela.
The Bagmati was flowing at 49.51 metres at Benibad in Muzaffarpur, remaining 0.83 metre above the danger mark.
The Burhi Gandak continued to pose concern in Khagaria, where the water level reached 37.73 metres, 1.15 metres above the danger mark of 36.58 metres. The river was rising at the location, increasing the risk of flooding in low-lying areas.
The Ganga witnessed a decline in water levels at several locations, including Patna, although the river continued to rise at Bhagalpur and Kahalgaon. At Digha in Patna, the Ganga was flowing at 50.59 metres, 0.14 metre above the danger mark. At Gandhi Ghat, the water level stood at 49.45 metres, 0.85 metre above the danger mark, while at Hathidah it was recorded at 42.59 metres, 0.83 metre above the danger mark.
In Bhagalpur, the Ganga was flowing at 33.70 metres, 0.02 metre above the danger mark, while at Kahalgaon it stood at 32 metres, 0.91 metre above the danger mark. The water level was rising at both places.
The Kamla river was flowing 0.49 metre above the danger mark at Kamtaul in Darbhanga, with the water level continuing to rise.
The Ghaghra was flowing 0.60 metre above the danger mark at Darauli in Siwan and 0.06 metre above the mark at Gangpur Siswan. The water level was receding at both locations.
Meanwhile, fluctuations were recorded in the volume of water being released into rivers from major barrages.
Nearly 85,170 cusecs of water was being released this morning into the Kosi from the Birpur barrage, compared with 85,460 cusecs at 8 pm on Saturday.
The discharge from the Valmikinagar barrage into the Gandak fell to 65,000 cusecs from 69,300 cusecs at 8 pm on Saturday.
In contrast, the discharge from the Indrapuri barrage into the Son rose to 49,996 cusecs from 43,007 cusecs during the same period.
In view of the prevailing flood situation, the Water Resources Department has intensified monitoring of river water levels, barrage discharges and the condition of embankments. Officials have been directed to remain vigilant about water pressure, erosion and possible seepage at vulnerable stretches and undertake protective and flood-control measures as required.
The administration is also focusing on keeping people in low-lying areas alert, shifting residents to safer locations whenever necessary and ensuring the availability of food, drinking water, medicines and other essential supplies at relief camps.
In a bulletin issued this morning, the Bihar government said patrolling was being carried out along both embankments of the Gandak. It said there was currently no seepage or piping and that all embankments were safe.
