Former Maine Governor and conservative Republican urges federal administration to not deport relative

Augusta, Sep 24 (UNI) Former Maine Governor Paul LePage has called on federal immigration authorities to halt the deportation of his son’s father-in-law, saying the man should be allowed to remain in the US as he has a valid work permit.
LePage, a conservative Republican running for a seat in the US House of Representatives, made immigration and border policy a central part of his campaign. But, according to The Washington Post, he has objected to the removal proceedings involving his relative.
“That’s not right,” LePage said. “He has a work permit. He should be allowed to stay.”
LePage said his relative was facing deportation because he came from a country “that’s not the liking to certain people in Washington”. He has not publicly identified the man or the country he is from.
The case comes as federal immigration enforcement has increased across Maine. The state saw a surge in ICE activity earlier this year, leading to renewed attention regarding how federal authorities carry out deportation operations and their excess brutality.
Tensions intensified after ICE agents fatally shot 25-year-old Colombian national Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero in Biddeford on July 13 during an attempted vehicle stop. The Department of Homeland Security said Guerrero tried to flee in his car during a targeted enforcement operation and that an officer opened fire after determining there was a threat to public safety.
Lawmakers and immigrant advocacy groups disputed parts of the federal account, while footage and witness accounts have prompted calls for greater scrutiny of the shooting.
Guerrero was not the intended target of the underlying enforcement operation, according to lawmakers, and questions have been raised over the circumstances leading to the use of deadly force.
The Biddeford shooting came amid a broader series of fatal encounters involving federal immigration officers. In Houston on July 7, an ICE agent fatally shot Mexican national Lorenzo Salgado Araujo during a vehicle stop.
ICE said Salgado had tried to evade arrest and attempted to ram a federal vehicle, while his family disputed the account. The Harris County district attorney’s office opened an investigation into the shooting.
Despite his support for tougher immigration enforcement, LePage has said ICE should focus its efforts on gang members and criminals rather than people who have valid work permits and have lived in the US for years.
“Would I go after everybody that’s here, that have work permits and have been here for decades? Probably not,” he said, according to the Bangor Daily News
