Saudi authorities issue brief alerts warning of potential air attacks including in Mecca

Riyadh, Sep 24 (UNI) Warning of potential drone or missile attacks amid fresh escalation in Houthi attacks, including one on the holy city of Mecca, Saudi Civil Defence issued a series of brief alerts to residents on Thursday.
The alerts, issued through Saudi Arabia's National Early Warning Platform, also covered Yanbu in the Red Sea governorate, as well as Taif, Jeddah and the Tabuk region. "A warning has been issued by the National Early Warning Platform in Mecca City to alert of a potential danger," the Civil Defence said.
While the warnings were lifted within minutes, it was not made immediately clear whether they were connected to the six ballistic missiles that the Saudi-led coalition said it intercepted later on Thursday or something else.
Coalition spokesman Major General Turki al-Malki said Saudi air defences had destroyed six ballistic missiles launched by the Iran-backed Houthis and thwarted an attempted attack on the western cities of Taif and Yanbu. He warned that the "escalation and violations" by the Houthis would be dealt with firmly.
The alerts come after a series of recent attacks by the Houthis, who have been fighting a Saudi-led coalition backing Yemen's internationally recognised government since 2015.
Last week, Riyadh accused the Islamist militia of targeting Mecca for the first time since 2017 after a drone was downed in the region, prompting widespread condemnation across the Arab world. The Houthis swiftly denied the accusation as a fabrication.
The Houthis seized strategic areas along Yemen's Red Sea coast earlier this month, including territory overlooking the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, a key route for Saudi oil exports and international shipping.
The Saudi-led coalition intervened in Yemen's civil war in 2015. Fighting was reduced by a fragile truce reached in 2022, but hostilities resumed this summer as the wider regional conflict expanded.
Saudi authorities have not said what triggered the brief alerts or whether they were directly linked to the intercepted missiles.
