Four Found Dead Inside Vessel Off Gorai Manori After Suspected Toxic Gas Exposure

Mumbai, Oct 1 (UNI) Four persons died after entering the interior of a ship stranded off the Gorai Manori creek in Borivali West, with police preliminarily suspecting that toxic gas inhalation or a lack of oxygen caused their deaths.
According to preliminary police information, a group had allegedly reached the vessel with the intention of stealing material from it. The ship has remained stranded in the area for the past four months.
Police said eight persons arrived near the vessel in a speedboat. While one person remained on the boat, seven others boarded the stranded ship. Of them, four allegedly went further inside to cut pipes.
The four are suspected to have been overcome by a gas leak or insufficient oxygen while inside the vessel. They subsequently died of suffocation caused by toxic gas inhalation or oxygen deficiency being considered as the possible cause. The exact cause of death is expected to be determined through postmortem examination.
According to police, the stranded vessel had previously been targeted in two theft incidents. Goods valued at Rs 2.5 lakh were allegedly stolen in one case and material worth Rs 5 lakh in another.
After receiving information about the latest incident, personnel from Gorai police reached the location. With assistance from the Navy, the four bodies were recovered from the ship and sent for postmortem.
Three persons found near the vessel have been detained and are being questioned in connection with the incident.
Police said a case had already been registered against the owner of the ship, who is reportedly absconding abroad. There is also suspicion that the vessel had been used for an alleged illegal oil business, although police are awaiting official confirmation on this aspect.
Further investigation into the deaths, the alleged attempted theft and other circumstances surrounding the stranded vessel is underway.
