Fresh complaint against bizman Veeramani, mom claims daughter ended life after sexual assault by him

Chennai, Sep 27 (UNI) At a time when the Special Investigation Team (SIT) has taken up the probe into the sexual assault on minor girls by R.Veeramani of Gem Granites, a fresh complaint has surfaced with a woman filing a complaint with the police that her daughter had committed suicide 10 years ago after being subjected to a similar assault.
In her complaint, the woman, seeking justice for her daughter, said she had approached Veeramani after hearing that he was providing educational assistance to children from economically weaker sections. He agreed to bear her daughter’s school expenses and admitted her to a private school in Teynampet.
The woman claimed that when her daughter was studying in Class 12, Veeramani had sexually assaulted her. As she was deeply distressed following the incident she ended her life by committing suicide. On a complaint from her mother demanding action against him for ruining her daughter's life, the Ice House police registered a FIR. But the bizman used his influence and money power to escape from legal action, she said in the fresh complaint.
The woman said now that he was arrested for similar offences she has come forward to lodge the complaint seeking justice for her daughter. Police officials who examined the complaint have taken note of the allegations, and the complaint has been forwarded to the Mylapore All-Women Police Station for further inquiry.
The alleged suicide took place about a decade ago. The complaint reportedly states that Veeramani had been involved in such activities since 2004. However, these are allegations contained in the woman's complaint and will have to be established through investigation and due legal proceedings.
Police records relating to the earlier complaint could not be traced because the Ice House police station was set on fire during the violence that followed the 2017 jallikattu protests. Several documents relating to cases registered at the station were reportedly destroyed in the fire. Since details of cases would have been uploaded on the court website, investigators are expected to obtain the relevant court records and use them to trace the complaint and investigate the allegations.
As the case grew bigger and bigger with more complaints pouring in, the Tamil Nadu government constituted the 4-member all Women SIT comprising senior police officers, including officers in the ranks of Inspector General, Deputy Inspector General and Superintendent of Police. and expanded it further by inducting seven Assistant Commissioners of Police. The SIT will function under the direct supervision of the Greater Chennai City Police Commissioner A.Amalraj, according to the order issued by Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal.
The case was initially registered in October 2025 after a pen drive containing a video purportedly showing Veeramani sexually assaulting a minor girl was handed over to police. After registering a FIR, the police had dropped further action in the case and filed a closure report in the POCSO court saying it could not trace the victim.
However, Special POCSO Court Judge Padma rejected the closure report and directed the police to continue the investigation. The fresh probe eventually led to the arrest of Veeramani and his acquaintances Shanthi and her husband Mahendra Simhan on August 29. The minor girl was subsequently traced and her statement was recorded before a Judicial Magistrate.
The investigation has seen significant breakthroughs with the police examining additional allegations, evidence handling and the role of persons connected with the earlier probe. Police also conducted searches at premises linked to Veeramani and arrested his close aide, also a former employee of Gem Granites, Ganesan in connection with the case, taking the total arrests to four. The police also found possession of videos and other materials from his mobile phone pertaining to the obscene acts of Veeramani, which he had failed to disclose to the police.
Investigators are examining whether other persons were involved and whether the alleged offences extended over a longer period by taking the arrested couple in their custody.
Apart from unravelling huge sums of money trail, running to more than Rs 50 crores allegedly to shield the industrialist, the investigation has also raised questions about the role of top police officers who handled the earlier complaint. A son of a prominent SRMU office-bearer identified as Prakash, was said to have acted as the conduit in settling the financial deals. The CCB police have issued summons
to him, but he was said to be staying abroad.
Cracking the whip, the government also shunted out three key police officers. While former Chennai Police Commissioner A.Arun, now ADGP TN Police Academy Director and former Chennai City Joint Commissioner and present Coimabtore City Police Commissioner N.Kannan, who were at the helm of affairs when the first complaint was registered, were put on compulsory wait, while Chennai City Assistant Commissioner Ms.M.A.Yasmin, who was the first IO, was kept under Vacancy Reserve.
Multiple pleas, including the one seeking a CBI probe and another by the main Opposition DMK seeking damages from Ministers Aadhav Arjuna and CTR.Nirmal Kumar and social media outlets, and a direction to register cases against them for levelling charges against DMK for inaction on the complaint and alleged attempts to cover up the case, were filed in the Madras High Court.
