Gaighata rape-murder: West Bengal govt gives Rs 10 lakh to victim's family; job plea before minister

Kolkata, Nov 4 (UNI) The West Bengal government on Wednesday handed over a compensation cheque of Rs 10 lakh to the family of the teenage girl who was allegedly raped and murdered at Gaighata in North 24-Parganas, 10 days after the incident sent shockwaves across the area.
Union Minister of State and Bongaon MP Shantanu Thakur handed over the cheque to the victim's father in the presence of Bongaon Sub-Divisional Officer Pragati Natial.
Informing the bereaved family that the assistance had been sent by the Chief Minister, Thakur said, "The Chief Minister has sent me here. We are all standing by you."
The family, however, also requested the union minister to arrange a government job for one of its members. Thakur assured them that he would take up the matter with the appropriate authorities.
The financial assistance has been provided under the state's prescribed compensation provisions for cases involving rape and murder. Though the money cannot compensate for the loss of their daughter, it is expected to provide some relief to the family, which is facing financial hardship.
The victim's parents broke down while receiving the cheque. Her father said that the family was already struggling with poverty and illness.
"My daughter will never return. We are a poor family and are also suffering from health problems. This money will provide us with some relief," he said.
The incident took place on the morning of Lakshmi Puja, when the girl's body, bearing multiple injury marks and partially unclothed, was recovered near the bathroom of a relative's house. The discovery triggered widespread tension and protests in the locality.
During the investigation, police arrested a relative of the victim, identified as Prahlad Das, in connection with the alleged crime. However, three days after the incident, the accused was killed in a police encounter.
According to the police, Das was taken to the locality for reconstruction of the crime scene as part of the investigation.
Police claimed that he tried to overpower personnel and snatch a service firearm on the pretext of responding to nature's call before attacking them. The police subsequently opened fire in self-defence, resulting in his death.
Meanwhile, the accused's mother has questioned the circumstances surrounding her son's death in the encounter and has sought financial assistance from the government.
North 24-Parganas police sources said that a formal communication had been sent to the authorities for extending financial assistance to the deceased accused's family in accordance with the prescribed rules. The process is reportedly underway.
