Gangster deported from Azerbaijan dies in Punjab jail, judicial probe ordered

Chandigarh, Oct 28 (UNI) A gangster accused in the 2024 triple murder in Punjab's Ferozepur district died after falling ill at Hoshiarpur jail, officials said on Wednesday, prompting authorities to order a judicial inquiry into his death.
The deceased, identified as Bhuvnesh Chopra, alias Ashish Chopra, was taken to the Civil Hospital in Hoshiarpur after his health deteriorated late on Tuesday.
Doctors declared him brought dead. The precise cause of death remains unclear and will be determined following a post-mortem examination.
Jail authorities reportedly suspected a heart attack, although no final medical findings have been released.
Chopra was among the principal accused in the September 3, 2024, triple murder in Ferozepur, when motorcycle-borne assailants opened fire on a car near Gurdwara Sri Akalgarh Sahib.
The attack killed Jaspreet Kaur, her cousin Dildeep Singh, also known as Lali, and Akashdeep Singh. Two others were injured.
Police investigations had linked the shooting to suspected gang rivalry and long standing enmity, with investigators identifying Dildeep Singh as the alleged primary target.
The killing attracted widespread attention after it emerged that Jaspreet Kaur was preparing for her wedding and had reportedly gone shopping before the attack.
Chopra was deported from Azerbaijan following coordination between Punjab Police and central agencies.
He was arrested at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport on March 12, 2026, after authorities issued a lookout circular against him.
Police said he faced nine criminal cases registered in Ferozepur, Fazilka and Patiala districts, including allegations of murder and narcotics trafficking.
Investigators had also suspected his involvement in networks linked to cross-border heroin smuggling from Pakistan.
Chopra was shifted between correctional facilities before being transferred to Hoshiarpur jail on October 23.
His death comes just five days after the transfer, raising questions about his medical condition and treatment during custody.
Authorities said a post-mortem examination and judicial inquiry would establish the circumstances surrounding his death.
