GI-tagged Tandur Redgram exported to Australia for first time

Hyderabad, Oct 28 (UNI) Telangana’s GI-tagged Tandur redgram (Tandur Kandulu) has entered the Australian market for the first time, with the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) facilitating the export of an initial consignment of 2.5 metric tonnes.
The consignment was flagged off from Hyderabad on Wednesday through a hybrid event by State Agricultural Production Commissioner and Agriculture Department Secretary Surendra Mohan and APEDA Assistant General Manager R P Naidu. Dr Sampath Kumar, Additional Director General of Foreign Trade, Hyderabad, exporter Sumanth R. and other officials attended the event.
Hyderabad-based Durga Exports and Imports is exporting the produce under the brand name ‘AMMAAS’ by sea to Australian importer Bharatamma Pty Ltd.
Tandur red gram, the first agricultural product from Telangana to receive a GI tag, is cultivated mainly in the Tandur, Basheerabad, Peddemul and Yalal mandals. Known for its distinctive taste, easy cooking and 22–24 per cent protein content, the crop derives its unique characteristics from the region’s soil and geological conditions.
Officials said the export marks an important step towards expanding international markets for Telangana’s distinctive agricultural products, creating new opportunities for farmers, producers and exporters. APEDA continues to support GI-tagged products through export linkages, market-access guidance and participation in international trade events.
