Gill double ton, Rohit milestone propel India to record 406 chase

Guwahati, Sept 30 (UNI) Shubman Gill's record-breaking double century and Rohit Sharma's landmark 12,000 ODI runs powered India to a stunning eight-wicket victory over West Indies in the second ODI here on Wednesday, as the hosts chased down a daunting 406-run target with 39 balls to spare and clinched the three-match series 2-0.
Gill produced a breathtaking unbeaten 223 off just 133 balls, studded with 26 fours and eight sixes, to spearhead one of India's most remarkable ODI chases at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium.
The Indian captain reached his double century off 128 balls, becoming the fastest Indian to achieve the feat in ODIs, surpassing Ishan Kishan's 126-ball mark. It was Gill's second ODI double century after his 208 against New Zealand in Hyderabad in 2023 and only the second double hundred scored in an ODI run chase, after Glenn Maxwell's unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan.
Gill's 223 also became the highest individual score in an ODI chase, while his assault ensured India reached 406 for two in only 43.3 overs.
Rohit provided the perfect launchpad, smashing 101 off 75 balls with 10 fours and six sixes. The opening pair added a staggering 255 runs from 158 balls before Rohit was trapped lbw by Jayden Seales in the 27th over.
Rohit's century, his 33rd in ODIs, also saw him complete 12,000 runs in the format, making him only the third Indian after Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli to reach the landmark.
Virat Kohli then added a brisk 29 off 19 balls before being caught by Sherfane Rutherford off Shamar Joseph. Ruturaj Gaikwad joined Gill and remained unbeaten on 31, with the pair adding an unbeaten 86 to complete the chase.
Earlier, West Indies produced an extraordinary batting display to post their highest-ever ODI total of 405 for seven after India opted to bowl first.
John Campbell launched the innings with a blistering 101 off 68 balls, hitting nine fours and five sixes. He raced to his half-century in just 29 balls and helped West Indies reach 96 in the opening 10 overs.
Campbell and Shai Hope then added 110 for the second wicket. Hope anchored the innings with a composed 104 off 94 balls, while Amir Jangoo provided the acceleration with a spectacular 114 off only 77 deliveries.
Jangoo smashed 13 fours and three sixes, and his partnership of 182 with Hope pushed West Indies towards the 400-mark.
Hope survived two opportunities before completing his fourth ODI century against India. Kuldeep Yadav dropped a difficult return catch when Hope was on 15, while Kohli later put down a chance at mid-wicket when the West Indies captain was on 27.
Jangoo also survived a miscued slog when a delivery from Naman Dhir ballooned towards deep mid-wicket. With no fielder stationed there, Rohit raced across and dived full length to flick the ball back and save several runs.
Jangoo eventually fell for 114 when he cut Ravindra Jadeja towards backward point, where Gaikwad held on after initially juggling the chance.
Roston Chase remained unbeaten on 29 off 25 balls and Shamar Joseph added an unbeaten 14 off eight, including a first-ball six against Jadeja, as West Indies finished on 405 for seven.
The total surpassed their previous ODI best of 389 against England.
Kuldeep claimed two wickets and completed 200 ODI wickets by dismissing Keemo Paul, becoming only the seventh Indian bowler and the second-fastest Indian to reach the milestone.
However, the West Indies record-setting effort was completely overshadowed by India's extraordinary chase, with Gill and Rohit reducing the imposing target to a routine pursuit.
India's victory was only the second successful chase of a target above 400 in ODI history, after South Africa's 438-run pursuit against Australia in Johannesburg in 2006.
India also recorded their ninth 400-plus ODI total, extending their lead over South Africa (eight) and England (seven).
With the final ODI still to be played, India have already sealed the three-match series 2-0.
