Gill's record-breaking double hundred rewrites ODI history

Guwahati, Sept 30 (UNI) Shubman Gill produced a breathtaking record-breaking innings against the West Indies on Wednesday, becoming the fastest batsman to score an ODI double hundred while also rewriting India's record books by reaching his 11th century in just 68 innings.
Gill reached his 11th ODI hundred in 68 innings, eclipsing Virat Kohli's previous Indian record of 82 innings. Only South Africa's Hashim Amla (64) and Quinton de Kock (65) have reached 11 ODI centuries faster, while Pakistan's Babar Azam took 71 innings and England's Jonny Bairstow 78.
The India captain brought up the landmark with a boundary in the 21st over of the ongoing ODI before turning the innings into a record-breaking assault.
Gill reached his double hundred in just 117 balls, taking the record for the fastest ODI 200 away from his India teammate Ishan Kishan, who had taken 126 balls against Bangladesh in Chattogram in 2022.
His 117-ball effort also makes it the joint fourth-fastest double hundred in all List A cricket. Only N Jagadeesan's 114-ball effort for Tamil Nadu against Arunachal Pradesh in Bengaluru in the 2022-23 season is faster by an Indian batsman.
Gill also became only the second batsman after Rohit Sharma to score multiple ODI double hundreds. Rohit has three double centuries in the format.
His 117-ball double hundred was particularly significant as it came during a run chase, making Gill only the second batsman to score an ODI double hundred while chasing. Glenn Maxwell's unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan in Mumbai during the 2023 World Cup remains the other instance.
Gill's unbeaten 202 also became the highest individual score in an ODI run chase, surpassing Maxwell's unbeaten 201. Fakhar Zaman's 193 against South Africa in Johannesburg in 2021, Shane Watson's unbeaten 185 against Bangladesh in Mirpur in 2011 and MS Dhoni's unbeaten 183 against Sri Lanka in Jaipur in 2005 complete the leading scores in successful ODI chases.
The century was Gill's third consecutive ODI hundred in India in 2026, placing him in distinguished company. AB de Villiers had hit four successive ODI hundreds in India in 2010-11, while Virat Kohli achieved the same feat in 2017-18.
The Guwahati ODI also became only the fourth match in which four individual batsmen scored centuries. The previous instances were Pakistan against Australia in Lahore in 1998, India against Australia in Nagpur in 2013 and Sri Lanka against Pakistan in Hyderabad in 2023.
Gill's latest exploits further underlined his extraordinary rate of accumulation in ODI cricket. His 11th century came in only 68 innings, while his double hundred arrived in record time, adding two major milestones to an already remarkable innings.
The India captain's unbeaten 202 has now given him the highest individual score in an ODI chase, while his 117-ball double hundred has added another landmark to an innings that saw him repeatedly rewrite the record books.
