Gill, Jaiswal tons put India in commanding position

Leeds, Jun 20 (UNI) Centuries from Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal lit up Headingley on Friday as India ended Day 1 of the first Test against England in a commanding position at 359 for 3.
Newly-appointed captain Shubman Gill led from the front with an authoritative unbeaten 127, notching his fourth Test hundred — and first as skipper — while Yashasvi Jaiswal earlier carved his name into the history books with a sublime 102, becoming the first Indian to score centuries on Test debut appearances in both England and Australia.
Jaiswal's innings was a classy exhibition of poise and precision. After India lost KL Rahul (42) and debutant Sai Sudharsan (0) in the first session, the left-hander anchored the innings with maturity beyond his years. He reached his hundred in the 49th over with a single off Brydon Carse, having earlier moved from 91 to 99 with consecutive boundaries — a ferocious cut and a sweetly timed cover drive. His 159-ball effort featured 16 boundaries and a six, and he departed soon after Tea, ending a vital third-wicket partnership with Gill worth 110 runs.
Gill, meanwhile, took over seamlessly. Starting cautiously, he accelerated after Tea and brought up his hundred in the 74th over — a 140-ball knock laced with 14 fours. His composure and elegance were on full display as he absorbed the pressure and then dictated terms, becoming only the fourth Indian captain to score a century in his first Test as skipper. By the end of the day, he had reached 127, laying the foundation for a potential match-defining first innings total.
Rishabh Pant joined Gill after Jaiswal’s dismissal and played with typical flair, mixing caution with aggression. He reached his fifty in 91 balls, striking five fours and a six, and looked increasingly confident against the second new ball, which was taken in the 81st over. Their fourth-wicket stand stood at an unbroken 138 by close of play.
India’s scoring milestones reflected steady control — 250 came up in the 63rd over, 300 in the 74th, and 350 in the 82nd. Extras contributed 24 runs, including five penalty runs in a bizarre incident where the ball struck the helmet behind the wicketkeeper during Ben Stokes’ over.
For England, Ben Stokes (2/43) and Brydon Carse (1/70) were the only wicket-takers on a day when their bowlers struggled to break India’s rhythm or extract consistent help from the surface. The second new ball also failed to deliver breakthroughs as Gill and Pant played through the final stretch with calm assurance.
At stumps, India had firmly seized the initiative, setting themselves up for a big total in the first innings of this five-Test series.
