Govt alert, issues advisories following fresh spate in Nepal, Dept issues advisory

Patna, Oct 12 (UNI) The Bihar government is maintaining close vigilance over river water levels and water releases from barrages in view of the fresh flood situation in Nepal.
According to the barrage discharge report issued by the Bihar Water Resources Department, water discharge was recorded from the Gandak, Kosi and Sone barrages. The report indicated an increasing trend in discharge from the Sone Barrage at Indrapuri, while the discharge trends at the Gandak and Kosi barrages remained stable.
According to the department's report, at 10 am on Monday, the Gandak Barrage at Valmikinagar was releasing 37,200 cusecs of water, while the Kosi Barrage at Birpur was discharging 64,115 cusecs. The Sone Barrage at Indrapuri was releasing 6,540 cusecs. A slight increase in discharge from the Sone Barrage was recorded compared with the figures at 8 a.m.
The report stated that at 4 a.m., the Gandak Barrage was discharging 50,600 cusecs and the Kosi Barrage 66,995 cusecs. Discharge from both barrages subsequently declined. Although the Sone Barrage's discharge fell from 10,903 cusecs at 4 a.m. to 6,540 cusecs at 10 a.m., figures from the preceding two hours indicated an upward trend.
According to information released by the Bihar government, heavy rainfall or flooding in Nepal could lead to changes in the flow of rivers such as the Gandak and Kosi, potentially affecting border areas and low-lying regions of Bihar. Residents living along riverbanks have been advised to remain alert to fluctuations in water levels. However, the available barrage report indicated that there was currently no additional flood threat to Bihar.
Water Resources Department Minister and Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary said the government was closely monitoring the situation following floods triggered by landslides in Nepal. He stated that after the flood surge reached the Valmikinagar Barrage, water discharge was expected to increase by approximately 15,000 cusecs.
However, Chaudhary ruled out the likelihood of any major impact on Bihar, adding that the situation was being continuously monitored and precautionary measures had been taken.
He said the department's flood management system was tracking water discharge from barrages, river levels and flood forecasts. Daily flood information bulletins and river-level data were also being made available through the department's Flood Management Improvement Support Centre.
The department has advised people living along riverbanks and in low-lying areas to follow administrative instructions, stay away from strong river currents, take potential warnings seriously and maintain vigilance.
