Gunmen open fire on GRP officer returning home in Punjab's Ajnala

Chandigarh, Oct 4 (UNI) Three unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants allegedly opened fire on an assistant sub-inspector of the Government Railway Police (GRP) while he was returning home after duty in Punjab's Ajnala area, police said.
ASI Sukhchain Singh, posted with the GRP in Amritsar, suffered a bullet injury to his left upper arm in the attack and was admitted to the Civil Hospital in Ajnala. Police said he was out of danger.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Dharminder Kalyan said the shooting took place between 7 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. when Singh was riding his motorcycle towards his native village, Jagdev Khurd.
"He was returning home after completing his duty when three unidentified persons riding a motorcycle opened fire at him," Kalyan told reporters.
The attack took place near the Jagdev Kalan canal, about a kilometre from Singh's home, police said. One of the bullets struck him in the left upper arm, below the shoulder, and passed through it.
Kalyan said Singh was in civilian clothes at the time of the attack.
"He was not in police uniform. We are investigating the case from every possible angle and technical evidence is also being examined," the DSP said.
Senior police officials visited the scene and the hospital after being informed about the shooting.
Police have registered a case against unidentified assailants and launched an investigation to identify and arrest them.
Asked whether the attack could be linked to an old rivalry or Singh's police duties, Kalyan said it was too early to establish a motive.
"The investigation is at a preliminary stage. All possible angles are being looked into," he added.
Police said efforts were under way to trace the attackers and establish the motive behind the shooting.
