Gurugram faces 15.55 lakh tonnes of pending landfill waste as minister orders dust-control crackdown

Gurugram, Oct 26 (UNI) With 15.55 lakh metric tonnes of waste still awaiting disposal at the Bandhwari landfill and hundreds of civic complaints unresolved, Haryana Industries and Commerce Minister Rao Narbir Singh on Monday ordered an intensified cleanliness and pollution-control drive across Gurugram, directing municipal authorities to make city roads dust-free and accelerate garbage collection and disposal.
At a review meeting with senior Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) officials, Singh examined the city's waste management operations, progress on landfill clearance, road redevelopment and enforcement of pollution-control regulations.
The review revealed that of the 58.50 lakh metric tonnes of waste received at Bandhwari until October 20, approximately 42.95 lakh metric tonnes had been processed, leaving 15.55 lakh metric tonnes yet to be cleared.
Officials informed the minister that contracts worth Rs 151.20 crore had been awarded for processing 16.80 lakh metric tonnes of waste. Another proposal involving 8.50 lakh metric tonnes, estimated at Rs 61.71 crore, has been submitted for approval.
Singh directed municipal officials to undertake regular deep cleaning and water sprinkling across the city's road network to control dust pollution, particularly during the period of deteriorating air quality.
He instructed officers to closely monitor cleaning operations and ensure that dust-control measures were implemented consistently rather than confined to occasional drives.
The review also exposed delays in municipal infrastructure works. Of the 3,815 complaints received under the 24-Hour Challenge, 3,041 had been resolved, leaving 774 pending.
Progress under the 100 Roads Challenge stood at just 29.3 per cent, while the 10 Iconic Roads project had achieved 35.8 per cent physical progress.
Under the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM)-linked road redevelopment programme, 223.90 km of the proposed 396 km network had been completed.
In an attempt to strengthen waste collection, the municipal corporation has awarded long-term contracts covering two operational clusters to Delhi MSW Solutions Limited and BVG India Limited.
The new arrangement provides for 875 vehicles, comprising 675 light commercial vehicles, 184 e-rickshaws and 16 compactors.
Deployment is scheduled to begin on October 28, with 100 vehicles expected in the first phase.
Until the new system becomes operational, the corporation is using 591 vehicles across eight zones for doorstep garbage collection.
Officials said 1,673 sanitation workers, 47 tractor-trolleys, six JCB machines and 25 mechanical road sweepers were also available for sanitation and related operations.
The municipal corporation reported issuing 12,914 challans amounting to approximately Rs 2.68 crore for violations of pollution-control and sanitation regulations between January 1 and October 23.
During the first three days of GRAP Stage-I enforcement, from October 21 to 23, authorities issued another 139 challans carrying penalties totalling Rs 4 lakh.
Singh directed officials to strengthen monitoring of waste collection, road cleaning, dust suppression and pollution-control measures, stressing that effective implementation was essential to provide residents relief from deteriorating environmental conditions.
Municipal Commissioner Pradeep Dahiya, Additional Commissioners Ankita Chaudhary, Yash Jaluka and Ravindra Yadav, Chief Engineer Vijay Dhaka and other senior officials attended the meeting.
