Gurugram police arrest 22-year-old for strangling elderly woman living alone

Gurugram, Oct 5 (UNI) Gurugram police on Monday arrested a 22-year-old man for allegedly strangling a 75-year-old retired teacher who lived alone at her house in New Colony, police said.
The accused, identified as Suraj Gupta, a native of Samastipur district in Bihar who was presently living in Gurugram's Madanpuri area, was arrested near Laxmi Bazaar Park in Pratap Nagar, police said.
The victim, Madhu Sharma, had been living alone at her New Colony residence for several years and had retired as a teacher in Delhi.
According to police, a neighbour spotted a man standing outside Sharma's house at around 8.15 p.m. on Sunday before entering the premises.
Soon afterwards, he heard screams from inside and alerted his father, other residents and the police.
When the neighbour and several local residents entered the house, the suspect allegedly moved towards the rear of the premises and hid among trees in the darkness.
Sharma was found lying dead on the floor near the doorway of a room.
Police called forensic, scene-of-crime and fingerprint teams to examine the house and sent the body for a post-mortem examination.
The post-mortem confirmed that Sharma died due to strangulation, police said.
A case was registered at New Colony police station under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
A police team led by New Colony SHO Inspector Sanjeev Kumar arrested Gupta on Monday.
During preliminary questioning, police said Gupta disclosed that he worked in preparing iron reinforcement structures used in building construction.
Police alleged that Gupta had entered Sharma's house and strangled her, but said the motive behind the killing was yet to be established.
Investigators are questioning the accused and examining all possible angles to determine why he entered the woman's house and what led to the killing.
Further investigation is underway, police said.
