Gurugram police's cyber net snares 1,709 fraudsters in 9months; Rs 29 Cr returned to victims

Gurugram, Oct 22 *UNI) In a blistering nine-month offensive against digital fraud, Gurugram Police have arrested 1,709 cyber criminals, blocked or recovered Rs 44.17 crore, and returned Rs 29.01 crore to swindled victims, even as the force opens a new front against a sophisticated scam targeting banking APIs and non-banking financial companies.
Between January 1 and September 30 this year, the city's cyber crime units were flooded with 33,376 complaints reporting a staggering Rs 166.47 crore in fraudulent losses. The police response has been equally massive: 1,017 FIRs registered, 530 cases worked out, and a relentless hunt that has already put nearly 1,700 accused behind bars.
But the numbers only tell half the story. The real battle has shifted to the server rooms. Recognising that fraudsters have graduated from phishing calls to weaponising banking Application Programming Interfaces, ACP Cyber Crime Gaurav Phogat on Thursday convened a high-stakes meeting with nodal and IT officers from 17 major banks.
Cyber police stations have already received three complaints of API misuse targeting NBFCs and legitimate financial institutions, exposing a potential fraud pipeline worth Rs 12 crore. The criminals are no longer just tricking customers; they are exploiting the digital arteries that connect banks to fintech platforms, siphoning funds into unknown beneficiary accounts by manipulating weak authentication and security gaps.
Phogat issued a six-point non-negotiable charter to the banking brass: Fortify API and digital infrastructure security and authentication protocols; Deploy real-time monitoring to flag unauthorised API hits, abnormal transaction patterns and suspicious financial behaviour; Act instantly on red flags without waiting for customer complaints; Resolve fraud complaints on a priority basis; Share banking records and relevant data with investigating agencies without delay. And most critically, trace the money trail and cooperate fully in recovery operations. For, financial institutions can no longer hide behind customer negligence when their own digital front doors have been left unlocked.
Of the Rs 166.47 crore reported stolen, police have either frozen in accounts or recovered Rs 44.17 crore, preventing further dissipation. More importantly, Rs 29.01 crore has already been credited back to victims and complainants, a rare instance of cyber enforcement translating into actual cash in real bank accounts rather than mere case files.
