Kolkata, Sep 26 (UNI) West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Saturday said that he had feared arrest during his long-drawn political battle against the previous Trinamool Congress (TMC) government and was preparing to send his elderly parents to Odisha in case he was jailed.
Chief minister Adhikari, whose father is 90 and mother is over 80, said he had been prepared to face imprisonment and had made arrangements for his parents amid what he described as an atmosphere of fear in West Bengal under the previous regime.
“My father is 90 years old. My mother is more than 80. I too had made my plans. I was prepared to fight and go to jail. If something happened, then so be it. I was even preparing to send both of my parents to Odisha,” Adhikari said.
“That was the kind of atmosphere that had been created in West Bengal,” he added.
Addressing the Ram-Sharad Kothari Pratibha Samman and Ram-Sharad Kothari Memorial Evening at the National Library here, Adhikari launched a sharp attack on the previous TMC government, alleging that the state’s culture and traditions had been systematically eroded.
“This time, the people of West Bengal have saved Bengal. Otherwise, we do not know what our situation would have been,” he said.
Adhikari, who was the Leader of the Opposition (LOP) before the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) party came to power, said West Bengal still had considerable work to do and that his government had begun efforts to address what he described as longstanding political, cultural and administrative challenges.
“There is still a lot of work to be done in West Bengal. We have done some work in a short period, but much more will have to be done,” he said.
Recalling his involvement in the Ram temple movement as a college student, Adhikari said he had worked with the Vishwa Hindu Parishad in Contai and participated in the Rath Yatra movement. He said joining the BJP subsequently enabled him to work openly on issues that he had previously been unable to pursue.
“Earlier, there was something in my heart, but my hands were tied,” he said.
Adhikari also referred to the violence that followed the 2021 Assembly elections, alleging that Sanatanis and nationalists had been subjected to atrocities in the state.
He praised RSS Sarkaryavah Dattatreya Hosabale for his role in helping people affected during that period.
The Chief Minister said his government had prioritised national security, including providing land to the Border Security Force along the state's borders, and had implemented Central laws in West Bengal.
He also accused the previous government of altering the date of West Bengal Day in a manner that, he alleged, sought to remove the contribution of Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee and Swami Pranabananda from the memory of younger generations.
Adhikari said his government had subsequently declared June 20 as West Bengal Day.
He further announced that a committee would be constituted in memory of Ram and Sharad Kothari, who were killed in police firing in Ayodhya in 1990 during the Ram temple movement.
“There should be a road named after them. There should be an award in their name in our universities and colleges,” he said, seeking suggestions from the organisers.
Adhikari said his government would continue working to preserve what he described as Bengal’s cultural and civilisational heritage. “There is still a lot of work to be done. ... All of us will have to work together,” he said.
