Hailstorms damage paddy, cotton crops in Haryana; Selja demands immediate compensation

Sirsa, Oct 25 (UNI) Unseasonal rain and hail storms have damaged standing paddy and cotton crops across several villages in Haryana's Sirsa and Fatehabad districts, prompting Congress MP Kumari Selja to demand an immediate assessment of crop losses, compensation for affected farmers and clearance of Rs 2,148 crore in pending paddy procurement payments.
The Sirsa MP said farmers in Hadoli, Nimari, Dadupur, Rattakhera, Jalopur, Bhatusotra and adjoining villages had suffered substantial crop damage, while rain-soaked agricultural produce lying in grain markets had added to their financial distress.
"Leaving farmers to face this crisis alone would be an injustice. The government must immediately conduct a special crop-loss assessment and ensure adequate compensation," Selja said.
She also demanded relaxation of moisture-related procurement norms to prevent farmers from suffering further losses.
Raising concerns over delayed procurement payments, the Congress general secretary claimed that nearly 88,000 farmers were awaiting Rs 2,148 crore despite the government's 72-hour payment rule.
She urged the Nayab Singh Saini government to expedite paddy lifting from grain markets and transfer outstanding payments directly into farmers' bank accounts.
Separately, Selja questioned the BJP government's law enforcement record, citing a sharp increase in cybercrime cases in Haryana.
Referring to National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) figures, she said cybercrime cases rose from 751 in 2023 to 1,815 in 2024, an increase of nearly 142 per cent, compared with approximately 18 per cent nationally and 74 per cent in neighbouring Punjab.
"Instead of making Haryana a leader in development, the BJP government is making it a leader in cybercrime," she alleged.
Selja questioned the effectiveness of cybercrime prevention measures and demanded better-equipped cyber police stations, trained investigators and greater accountability for recovering money lost by fraud victims.
She also expressed concern over rising unemployment, drug abuse and criminal activities, warning that these problems were threatening the future of Haryana's youth.
The MP urged the state government to prioritise farmers' welfare, employment generation and public safety over political publicity.
