Haryana hospitals on Diwali alert; emergency beds reserved, doctors on 24-hour duty Convert to PDF

Panchkula, Nov 4 (UNI) Hospitals across Haryana have been directed to keep emergency beds, burn treatment facilities, and specialist doctors ready during Diwali to ensure that people injured in firecracker accidents, road mishaps, or other emergencies receive immediate medical attention without delay, Health Minister Arti Singh Rao said on Wednesday.
The state government has issued a special advisory to government and private hospitals, asking them to strengthen emergency services and ensure adequate medical staff, medicines and equipment throughout the festive period.
The directions come amid concerns over a possible increase in burn injuries, eye injuries, breathing difficulties and road accidents during Diwali celebrations.
Rao said government hospitals had been instructed to reserve more than 20 beds for emergency cases, while additional beds would be earmarked in ophthalmology, orthopaedics and surgery departments to accommodate patients requiring specialised treatment.
The minister said hospitals must ensure that no patient requiring emergency care, particularly those injured in firecracker-related accidents, faces unnecessary delays in receiving treatment.
Under the advisory, government and private hospitals have been asked to keep dedicated burn treatment facilities ready and maintain sufficient stocks of essential medicines and medical supplies.
These include burn treatment kits, oxygen cylinders, bronchodilators, intravenous fluids, antibiotics, and other medicines required to manage emergency cases.
Hospitals have also been directed to ensure the availability of stretchers, beds, intravenous stands and other equipment needed to treat patients arriving with burns or other serious injuries.
Special attention will be given to eye injuries caused by firecrackers, with ophthalmologists required to remain available for emergency consultations and treatment.
Specialists in orthopaedics and surgery have also been instructed to remain on call to handle accident-related injuries and cases requiring urgent surgical intervention.
To prevent shortages of medical personnel during the festival, the Health Department has directed doctors, specialists and other medical staff not to leave their respective cities during the Diwali period.
The instructions are intended to ensure that hospitals have sufficient medical personnel available to respond to emergencies without delays.
Teams of eye, ear, nose, and throat specialists will remain available, while arrangements will also be made to provide specialist services from both government and private healthcare institutions whenever required.
The minister said emergency preparedness should not be limited to general casualty departments, as patients with serious burns, eye injuries or multiple fractures may require immediate attention from different specialists.
Hospitals have also been instructed to reserve beds in trauma centres and intensive care units for critically injured patients.
The advisory places particular emphasis on ensuring the availability of oxygen support, essential medicines, and equipment required to stabilise patients before further treatment.
Rao said hospitals should remain prepared to handle emergencies arising from firecracker accidents, respiratory distress, and other medical complications during the festival.
The Health Department has asked hospital authorities to maintain coordination among emergency departments, specialist units, and intensive care facilities to ensure timely treatment.
The minister said the government's priority was to ensure that people celebrating Diwali could access medical assistance promptly in the event of an accident or medical emergency.
She directed hospital administrations to make all necessary arrangements in advance so that emergency services remained available throughout the festive period.
