Haryana: Police bust gift voucher route in Rs 1.23 lakh credit card fraud, 2 arrested

Panchkula, Oct 1 (UNI) Haryana Police have arrested two Delhi residents for their alleged role in a Rs 1.23-lakh credit card fraud in which a victim was tricked into sharing card details and an OTP on the pretext of deactivating a health plan, a police spokesman said here today.
The arrests have also uncovered an alleged method of converting proceeds of cyber fraud into gift vouchers and mobile phones before routing the money back to fraudsters, the spokesman said.
The accused were identified as Arvind Kumar of Uttam Nagar and Talim Asad of Geeta Colony, Delhi. They were arrested by the Cyber Police Station, Ballabgarh, during investigation of a complaint filed by a Faridabad resident.
According to the Haryana Police spokesman, the victim received a call from an unidentified number on September 12. The caller allegedly posed as an Axis Bank employee and told him that a health plan had been activated on his credit card for which Rs 2,100 was being charged every month.
The caller offered to deactivate the plan and sent a link to the victim on WhatsApp. Believing the caller, the complainant entered his credit card details through the link and subsequently shared an OTP after being instructed to do so.
“Soon after the OTP was shared, a total of Rs 1,23,700 was fraudulently debited from the credit card,” the police spokesman said.
A case was subsequently registered at Cyber Police Station, Ballabgarh, and investigators used technical evidence and other information gathered during the probe to trace the two accused.
Police said interrogation revealed that gift vouchers worth around Rs 1.23 lakh had allegedly been sent to Arvind by an acquaintance.
Arvind allegedly used the vouchers at a Croma outlet to purchase mobile phones and other goods and then sold the phones at lower prices to Talim. Police alleged that the money received from Talim was subsequently routed back to the cyber fraudsters.
The investigation also revealed that Arvind and Talim had earlier worked at a mobile phone shop, where they came into contact with each other, the spokesman said.
Haryana Police are now probing the entire money trail and the role of other people suspected to be part of the cyber fraud network.
Further investigation is underway, the spokesman added.
