Haryana: Women's Commission cracks whip on unsanitary hospitals, exhausting queues

Bhiwani, Oct 10 (UNI) In a decisive move that placed women's dignity and health rights at the centre of public healthcare accountability, Meena Parmar, Vice Chairperson of the Haryana State Women's Commission, conducted a surprise inspection at Pandit Nekiram Sharma Medical College here today.
What she found sent a clear message to medical administrators across the state: infrastructure alone does not make a hospital women-friendly. Basic sanitation, dignified queues, and responsive care do.
Ms Parmar did not arrive with prior notice, fanfare, or a prepared script. She arrived with a mandate: to see whether the state's largest medical institutions respect the women who walk through their doors, often in pain, anxiety, and vulnerability.
Her first stop revealed a troubling reality. An inspection of the toilet facilities on the premises found the sanitation arrangements unsatisfactory and poorly maintained.
Parmar did not mince words, directing the medical officers to act immediately. She stated that clean and functional women's toilets in any medical institution are absolutely non-negotiable.
"In a place where the sick come seeking treatment, and where attendants accompany patients through long, stressful hours, unclean toilets are not merely an inconvenience. They are a health hazard," she said.
She warned that poor sanitation breeds disease, and in a medical college where immunity is already compromised, the risk is magnified. She further underlined that safe and clean drinking water must accompany sanitation efforts, forming the bare minimum standard of care that every patient, particularly women, is entitled to.
Ms Parmar then turned her attention to the patient registration system, where another silent struggle unfolds daily. She observed that women were being subjected to long waiting lines, standing for extended periods simply to register for treatment. She issued immediate directions that women must not be made to stand in queues for unreasonable lengths of time. For sick patients and their attendants, many of whom are women themselves, prolonged waiting is not just uncomfortable; it deepens distress and discourages timely care.
"When a woman is already unwell, forcing her to endure long lines for basic registration is a failure of the system, not the patient," she emphasised.
During the inspection, Ms Parmar delivered a strong message about the Commission's role and resolve, stating that the Haryana State Women's Commission is deeply committed to safeguarding women's rights and takes every complaint that reaches it with utmost seriousness.
She informed those present that the Commission is actively hearing complaints from women across all districts of Haryana, directing concerned officials and ensuring follow-up action. Crucially, she extended a direct appeal to women patients: if any negligence, lapse or misconduct occurs during medical treatment, they should not suffer in silence. Women can file complaints directly with the Commission, and strict action will be initiated as per rules.
This assurance transforms the Commission from a distant body into an active shield for women inside hospital wards, operation theatres, and outpatient departments.
During the visit, Deputy Medical Superintendent Dr Rajesh Kumar briefed Ms Parmar on the college administration's efforts to provide the best possible medical facilities to patients according to their needs.
He assured that the administration remains committed to patient welfare and would address the concerns raised. Dr Monica Lamba, Dr Ramesh Lamba, Dr Rishabh and several other staff members were also present during the inspection. UNI KK SS
