HC directs Odisha govt to disclose steps on mental health programmes in schools, colleges

Bhubaneswar, Sep 19 (UNI) The Orissa High Court has directed the Odisha government to file a compliance affidavit within three weeks disclosing the steps taken across the state to implement comprehensive mental health awareness programmes in schools, colleges, universities and other educational institutions.
A division bench comprising Chief Justice Harish Tandon and Justice Chittaranjan Dash issued the direction in this regard while hearing a PIL filed by SK Sabir Ali and others.
The court observed that the PIL raised a serious concern over comprehensive mental health awareness programmes in educational institutions across the state.
It further noted that recent reports indicated several instances raising concerns over the mental wellness of students and other sections of society, and said the government could not show an apathetic attitude in this regard.
The court posted the matter for further hearing on October 15.
The PIL called for measures to reduce mental stress among students, strengthen their emotional resilience and create awareness about mental health.
The petitioners represented by counsel Afras Suhel submitted that comprehensive mental health awareness programmes should be conducted in all educational institutions and urged the government to take immediate steps to address concerns over mental well-being.
