Himachal : Kinnaur Congress protests against alleged electoral irregularities, burns effigies

Kinnaur, September 28 (UNI) The Kinnaur district unit of the Congress on Monday staged a protest at the district headquarters against what it described as alleged irregularities in the electoral process and “vote theft”, and burnt effigies of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, union Home Minister Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The protest was held under the leadership of Kinnaur District Congress Committee president Nigam Bhandari, who addressed party workers during the demonstration.
Bhandari accused the Election Commission and the BJP-led Centre of compromising the electoral process and alleged that irregularities in elections were being carried out in a “planned manner”.
He alleged that “vote theft is murder of democracy” and claimed that the process was being carried out with the alleged support of the Centre and the Election Commission.
Referring to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s allegations regarding irregularities in the electoral process, Bhandari said Gandhi had repeatedly raised questions over the functioning of the Election Commission and had also held a press conference on the issue of “vote theft”.
He referred to reports concerning the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and alleged that objections raised by two Election Commissioners, repeated changes in reports and issues relating to the inclusion of young voters had strengthened the concerns raised by the Congress.
Bhandari also questioned the process for appointing the Chief Election Commissioner, alleging that the Narendra Modi government had changed the mechanism for appointing the Election Commission and replaced the earlier role of the Chief Justice of India with that of a union Cabinet minister in the selection process.
He further alleged that Gyanesh Kumar was appointed as Chief Election Commissioner despite opposition from Rahul Gandhi.
The Congress leader also raised questions over the legal safeguards available to Election Commissioners and alleged that the government had provided protection to the Election Commission through legislation.
He alleged that the suspension of opposition MPs from Parliament had enabled the government to pass legislation in their absence, and claimed that the law had made it difficult to take action against Election Commissioners.
Bhandari further alleged that the Election Commission had failed to satisfactorily respond to questions raised by Rahul Gandhi regarding CCTV footage related to the electoral process.
He said the Congress would continue to raise the issue and demanded accountability from the Election Commission and the Centre.
Bhandari warned that if the Chief Election Commissioner was not removed and action was not taken against him, the Congress would intensify its protests.
The allegations made by Bhandari and the Congress could not be independently verified.
