Himachal: Kotkhai apple growers demand ban on Turkish imports amid rising anti-Pakistan sentiment

Shimla, May 20 (UNI) In the aftermath of the recent Pahalgam massacre and subsequent tension between India and Pakistan, apple growers from the Kotkhai region of Shimla district have demanded a complete ban on the import of Turkish apples.
A delegation of Kotkhai residents met Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Tuesday and urged him to take up the issue with the Union Government at the earliest.
The demand is rooted in growing resentment against nations perceived to be supporting Pakistan amid ongoing border tensions.
Although a ceasefire has been declared between India and Pakistan, public anger remains high, especially in the northwestern Himalayan states that have long borne the brunt of border conflicts.
The delegation accused Turkey and China of siding with Pakistan by supplying it with modern arms, including drones, missile systems and fighter jets.
“Apple growers in Himachal Pradesh have already suffered due to the dumping of cheap apples from Turkey. Now, continuing trade with a country that adopts an anti-India stance is unacceptable,” said one of the growers.
The community is demanding immediate cessation of all horticultural imports from such nations as a form of economic retaliation.
The delegation also thanked the Chief Minister for initiatives like adoption of universal cartons and the move to purchase apples on a weight basis, which have benefited the growers.
MLAs Sanjay Awasthi and Vivek Sharma, Principal Advisor (Media) to the CM Naresh Chauhan, and former MLA Bamber Thakur were also present during the meeting.
As India navigates the geopolitical implications of the recent ceasefire, farmers in Himachal Pradesh are pressing for strong economic measures, including trade restrictions, to protect local interests and uphold national sentiment.
