Hindu Raksha Dal claims responsibility for attacks on Delhi protesters; four arrested

New Delhi, Oct 11 (UNI) The arrest of four men linked to the Hindu Raksha Dal over an alleged assault on demonstrators has intensified scrutiny of the handling of protests in the national capital, after videos circulated on social media showing saffron-clad men threatening and attacking protesters during Saturday’s agitation against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The outfit’s chief, Pinki Chaudhary, claimed responsibility for the attack in a social media post, identifying the accused as his workers and issuing a warning against those who, he alleged, targeted Sanatan Dharma. The videos showed groups of men confronting demonstrators at different locations, with some incidents apparently unfolding in the presence of police personnel.
Delhi Police said four men had been arrested in connection with an assault reported on Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg on Saturday. The incident falls under the jurisdiction of Kamla Market police station. Police identified the accused as Raman Saini, 50, Vivekanand, 32, Kapil Kumar, 27, and Ravinder Singh, also known as Govind Hindu. They are residents of Delhi-NCR and were linked to a faction of the Hindu Raksha Dal led by Chaudhary, also known as Bhupendra Tomar.
According to the police, the arrests followed an examination of videos circulating online and inquiries to establish the identities and whereabouts of those allegedly involved.
“Taking suo motu cognisance of a video circulating on social media showing four men allegedly assaulting a male protester, Delhi Police, PS Kamla Market, acted promptly and initiated legal proceedings,” a police spokesperson said.
Chaudhary, meanwhile, acknowledged the men as members of his organisation in a post on X. “These are my workers from the Hindu Raksha Dal, an organisation that delivers on its promises,” he wrote, using derogatory language for the protesters and asserting that his organisation would continue its actions.
In another post, he described the men as “warriors” of Sanatan Dharma and warned that anyone targeting the faith would face retaliation. He also said his organisation had no political ambitions but would respond to those it believed were attacking its religious identity.
The posts followed Chaudhary’s earlier appeal to supporters to reach Jantar Mantar carrying sticks, ahead of the protest called by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) and student organisations seeking Kumar’s resignation over alleged irregularities in the functioning of the Election Commission. A CJP spokesperson said, “The attack on peaceful protesters is an assault on democratic rights, and the police must ensure accountability for everyone involved.”
Chaudhary was detained at his residence in Ghaziabad, according to reports. However, videos shared online showed groups identifying themselves with right-wing organisations moving through central Delhi, confronting demonstrators and shouting slogans in support of the police and the administration.
In one video, men were heard chanting, “Delhi Police tum lathi bajao, hum tumhare saath hain” (Delhi Police, wield your batons; we stand with you). Other footage appeared to show men chasing protesters, abusing them and assaulting a male demonstrator while manhandling a woman. The circumstances surrounding the different incidents and the identities of all those seen in the videos were not immediately established. UNI PWS SS
