SFI alleges 22 women activists detained after sunset during Tiranga rally in Delhi

New Delhi, Oct 11 (UNI) The Students’ Federation of India (SFI) on Sunday alleged that Delhi Police detained 22 of its women activists after sunset during a Tiranga rally at Connaught Place, claiming they were manhandled and slapped by male police personnel.
In a statement, SFI Delhi said the rally was organised to protest against what it described as police brutality against peaceful demonstrators and attacks on women protesters and journalists during demonstrations in the national capital on Saturday.
The student organisation alleged that the women activists were forcibly picked up despite legal safeguards governing the arrest and detention of women after sunset. It cited Section 43(5) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), claiming the detention violated the provision.
SFI further alleged that male police personnel physically handled and slapped some of the activists during the detention, in violation of Section 46(1) of the BNSS, which lays down safeguards concerning the arrest of women.
The organisation also claimed that the bus used to transport the detained activists had no lights and that no woman police officer was present inside it. It cited the Supreme Court's ruling in Sheela Barse v. State of Maharashtra in support of its concerns over the treatment and safety of the detainees.
The rally was held against what SFI described as attacks by right-wing activists on women protesters and journalists, as well as police action against demonstrators. The allegations of violence and unlawful detention were made by SFI in its press statement and could not be independently verified.
There was no immediate response from Delhi Police to the allegations.
