HK Patil draws attention to staggering illegal mining backlog

Raichur, June 21 (UNI) In the backdrop of a controversial audio clip allegedly involving senior leader BR Patil, Karnataka Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister HK Patil has drawn attention to a staggering backlog of illegal mining cases in the state — revealing that of more than 12,000 registered cases, only 0.2 per cent have reached final judgement.
Speaking to the media at the University of Agricultural Sciences in Raichur, Patil said, “Despite over 12,000 cases being registered related to illegal mining, only 7 per cent have even been investigated. Of those, convictions have been delivered in merely 2 per cent — which comes down to just 0.2 per cent of the total cases.”
The minister’s statement comes at a time when the government is facing public scrutiny following the circulation of an audio clip allegedly featuring former minister BR Patil, sparking criticism and political tension. Observers suggest HK Patil's remarks may be part of a broader push to steer attention back to governance and institutional accountability.
“In order to resolve this long-pending issue, I have written to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, urging serious and immediate action. This is not merely a legal problem, it is a matter of public trust and state interest,” Patil emphasised.
He further stated that of nine cases handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the agency declined to pursue six, taking up only three. “The Special Investigation Team (SIT) too has shown very limited progress. That’s why I decided to escalate this to the Chief Minister. I have already shared the letter with him, and he has responded with seriousness,” he added.
Patil was in Raichur to participate in a felicitation ceremony at the Agricultural University, held on the occasion of Revenue Minister NS Boseraju’s birthday, where a commemorative volume was released.
Illegal mining remains one of Karnataka’s most pressing governance challenges, particularly in districts like Ballari and Raichur. With conviction rates so low, the issue continues to raise serious questions about the effectiveness of investigative mechanisms and political will.
