Telangana should lead the nation in Power Sector: Deputy CM Bhatti

Hyderabad, June 21 (UNI) Telangana should serve as a “compass” for the entire country in the electricity sector, said Deputy Chief Minister and Power Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu on Saturday.
Addressing a gathering of electricity department staff at Praja Bhavan, he announced a 1.944 per cent Dearness Allowance (DA) hike for electricity employees and pensioners in the state.
The revised DA will benefit 71,417 employees and pensioners, including artisans. The hike will be implemented retrospectively from January 2025.
The hike is likely to place an additional burden of Rs 11.193 crore per month on power companies.
Reiterating the state government's commitment to employee welfare, Bhatti said, "Government and electricity staff are like an ideal family. The welfare of employees remains our top priority, and this decision reflects that."
He emphasised the critical role of electricity in a competitive world, likening it to the essential nature of air for human survival. He noted that under the Congress government's leadership, Telangana had already seen a significant increase in power demand- from a peak of 15,000 MW in March 2023 to 17,162 MW in March 2025- indicating growing industrial and domestic energy needs.
Looking ahead, Bhatti projected a sharp rise in demand, estimating that Telangana would require 26,299 MW by 2029–30 and 33,773 MW by 2034–35. To meet these challenges, he said the government would plan proactively for power production, including the ambitious goal of generating 20,000 MW of green energy by 2029–30.
Calling on electricity employees to be prepared for future challenges, the Deputy CM lauded their contributions in maintaining uninterrupted and quality power supply, especially during high-demand periods.
The event was attended by top officials and representatives from various associations, including Transco CMD Krishna Bhaskar, Power Engineers Association leader Ratnakar, Electrical Engineers Association leader Shivaji, and leaders from several unions and pensioners’ groups.
