Home Minister Amit Shah cancels proposed Shillong visit for second time

Shillong, Oct 3 (UNI) Home Minister Amit Shah's proposed two-day visit to Meghalaya’s capital, Shillong, on Sunday has been cancelled, official sources said on Saturday.
Shah was scheduled to present the President of India’s Police Colour to the Meghalaya Police on October 5. The next day, he was supposed to visit Mizoram.
This is the second time the Home Minister has rescheduled his visit to Shillong, with the first postponement occurring ahead of his initially planned September 24 trip.
“Yes, the union Home Minister has cancelled his proposed visit to Shillong due to unavoidable circumstances and a new date will be fixed for his visit to the State,” a government official told UNI.
Shah was scheduled to arrive on Sunday night for a two-day visit to Shillong, where he was to hold a meeting with state BJP leaders after his party bolstered its strength from two to ten in the 60-member Meghalaya Assembly.
Last month, eight of the 12 United Democratic Party (UDP) legislators were inducted into the BJP in the presence of union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju and others at BJP headquarters in New Delhi.
The crossover of the eight legislators led by Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui has effectively repositioned the BJP as the second-largest political entity in the state, trailing only the ruling National People’s Party (NPP), which commands an absolute majority of 33 legislators—two seats above the required simple majority mark in the assembly.
The UDP, the main regional political party in the state, has now been reduced to four legislators, with UDP Working President and veteran legislator Paul Lyngdoh revealing that the three remaining legislators are on the verge of jumping ship.
The BJP, which is part of the NPP-led ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA), has traditionally had only two elected members in the assembly – AL Hek and Sanbor Shullai – both representing Shillong urban constituencies and have alternately held cabinet portfolios in the government.
“Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to meet BJP legislators and state party leaders tomorrow (Sunday) following the recent political developments in the State,” State BJP President Rikman G Momin told UNI before Shah cancels his Shillong itinerary.
“There is no specific agenda as such for the meeting, but the Home Minister wants party leaders and legislators to start preparing the BJP’s ground to ensure a resounding victory and lead the government in Meghalaya,” Momin said. UNI RRK SAS
