Hundreds of protesters, including Opposition leaders, detained near Jantar Mantar, seek CEC’s resignation

New Delhi, Oct 2 (UNI) Protesters, including opposition party leaders and members of student wings, took to the streets on Friday demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Around 600 protesters were detained by police near Jantar Mantar and other nearby locations in New Delhi.
AAP, left parties, NSUI and AISA workers had come to stage a protest at the Jantar Mantar, demanding Kumar's resignation in connection with the alleged irregularities during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, with allegations of mass deletions of voter names.
Among those detained were AAP's Atishi, Saurabh Bharadwaj, Sanjay Singh, Sanjeev Jha, activist Yogendra Yadav, and several other such leaders, who were taken away from the area and later released.
The protest call was given by a coalition of student organisations on Gandhi Jayanti, with demonstrators demanding the resignation of the CEC and alleging that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise was not conducted properly.
Meanwhile, the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) had also called for a similar demonstration in Mumbai on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti.
AAP leader Atishi, in a social media post, said the spirit of the revolutionaries remained undiminished even at Fatehpur Beri police station. She said the fight for democracy would continue and asserted that “Gyanesh Kumar will have to go.”
Protesters were asked not to proceed towards Jantar Mantar, as the demonstration had not been granted permission. Prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) were also in force across New Delhi district.
There were enhanced security arrangements across the New Delhi District, and barricading was placed on roads that led to Jantar Mantar.
The Delhi Metro also closed entry and exit at 12 stations, including Rajiv Chowk, Patel Chowk, Central Secretariat and Mandi House, until further notice.
The entry and exit at the metro stations, including Janpath, Patel Chowk, Central Secretariat, Rajiv Chowk, Seva Teerth, Mandi House, Lok Kalyan Marg, INA, Chawri Bazar, New Delhi, and RK Ashram Marg had been withheld during the day by the DMRC, while interchange facility was available at Rajiv Chowk, Mandi House, INA, New Delhi and Central Secretariat stations.
The police had put up banners and notices regarding the no permission for the unauthorized gathering, sloganeering or demonstration as per the appropriate section of law.
The protestors alleged that the poll panel had manipulated the voter lists in a way that the arrangement could be in favour of the saffron party, while they also sought answers and accountability with regard to the deletion of the names in the poll rolls during the SIR.
Meanwhile, AAP leader Bharadwaj said that to protest is everyone's democratic and constitutional right.
As per reports, CJP convenor Saurav Das has said that the party's protest will only come to an end when the CEC resigns.
