IIT Kharagpur to lead regional coordination of Bengal's Seva First Innovation Challenge

Midnapore, Oct 11 (UNI) IIT Kharagpur will spearhead regional coordination of the West Bengal government's Seva First Innovation Challenge, aimed at encouraging students, researchers and young innovators to develop practical, technology-driven solutions to pressing social and developmental challenges.
Designated the zonal coordinator under the Seva Sankalp Maha Abhiyan, the institute will collaborate with district administrations and educational institutions to expand participation and promote innovation across sectors such as agriculture, water management, climate and disaster resilience, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and semiconductor technologies.
IIT Kharagpur director Prof. Suman Chakraborty, accompanied by a team of institute officials, met West Midnapore district magistrate Bijin Krishna on Friday to discuss preparations for the initiative, institutional participation and coordination.
"The challenge seeks to bring students, academicians, researchers, entrepreneurs and professionals onto a common platform to showcase innovative ideas and technology-driven solutions to real-world problems. The emphasis is on translating scientific thinking into practical applications that can address local needs and contribute to wider development," IIT Kharagpur public relations officer Pratik Dama said.
The initiative envisages regional and district-level innovation conclaves to identify promising ideas and provide innovators with opportunities to present their solutions on a wider platform, Dama said.
The collaboration between IIT Kharagpur and the district administration is expected to facilitate the participation of educational institutions and encourage scientific inquiry, entrepreneurship and problem-solving among young people.
The programme seeks to create a platform where academic knowledge and technological expertise can be applied to challenges affecting communities, while enabling innovators to develop solutions with wider developmental potential.
"By taking on the zonal coordination role, IIT Kharagpur has reaffirmed its commitment to fostering innovation and strengthening links between academic institutions and public administration to advance technology-led social development," Dama added.
